About this listen

You never knew where a road would end, Dicey thought, the breeze curling around her ears, you just knew what roads ended. Not like water, which always keeps moving. Not like the stars, tossed out across the sky. But the Tillermans traveled on a road, and roads ended. Dicey's road, and James's, Maybeth's, Sammy's, had ended here. The Tillermans' road had rolled up against Gram's house, and they had tumbled off it into Gram's. Dicey grinned. Not exactly into Gram's arms, maybe not into her lap. Certainly into her life from Dicey's Song. It took 13-year-old Dicey Tillerman all summer to get herself and her three younger siblings to their grandmothers run-down farm on the Chesapeake Bay. Now the four of them face the difficult challenges of fitting into a frightening new world, one where once again, they are outsiders. Gram told Dicey to just hold on, to do all that she could to keep the family together. The trouble is, Dicey has only two hands, and quite a few problems of her own. Growing up, she discovers, is more than just holding on to what is important, it is learning how to let go.©1982 Cynthia Voigt (P)1992 Recorded Books,LLC Family Life Fiction Growing Up Growing Up & Facts of Life Multigenerational Family Summer

My favorite since I was a child

I’m sure that I could hear the chair creaking and conversations from the next room in the studio while I listened, but I still loved it.

I found this book on a shelf as a child, recommend it to all my students, and have reread it as an adult. I still love it as much now as I did then. It’s a roller coaster of emotions, and you’ll find yourself rooting for the main characters. You will end the book feeling like you really know and love the characters;they will be like someone from your neighborhood or your school.

Strong and rich Characters

Throughly enjoyed this follow up. Wish audible had the full series. There shouldn’t be a character minimum for reviews.

Beautiful hopeful book

It’s old school but a great family story. Love how sensitive this author is to mental health issues.

childhood unlocked

I read this in the 5th grade. I couldn't believe how many core thoughts and memories I've carried with me through this book

Calm easy read

There's no teen "drama" in this book, just a recounting of one family's journey. There is sadness and realization and maturing. Read the 1st book before or it might be boring since you've no context. One reviewer didn't like it but he/she is a child. An adult can appreciate it more; although, it is definitely appropriate for children- preteen or young teen.

Childhood

This was an important staple in my childhood & I am glad I was able to find an audio version. I didn't love as much as Homecoming but it was a decent follow up. I wish there a movie version of this. Overall worth the credit.

Snoozer

Would you try another book from Cynthia Voigt and/or Barbara Caruso?

No, but I have to read "A Solitary Blue" despite disliking this book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not another book from this author, if I can help it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Boring reading.

What character would you cut from Dicey's Song?

All the characters. Bah!

Any additional comments?

This book was just plain boring. Most of the dialogue was idle meaningless banter. I had to read this for my 6th grade English Class, and hated most every minute of the book. At least the audio version helped me get through the book and earn a decent grade on the assignment. Thank you Audible for making this go faster.
