About this listen

We see it everywhere: at the park, in restaurants, and inside our homes and cars - kids connected to handheld devices and disconnected from the world around them. According to the latest research, the average 13-year-old spends eight hours per day, seven days a week, glued to a screen. Yes, this is problematic, but for every problem there is a solution.

In Disconnected, renowned psychotherapist and longtime school counselor Tom Kersting explores the device-dependent world our children live in and how it is impacting their mental and emotional well-being. Research shows that too much time in the cyber world is re-wiring kids’ brains, affecting their ability to flourish in the real world as anxiety, depression, and attention issues soar.

Thankfully, it is not too late to save our children. Kersting provides simple strategies to help reduce screen time as well as a host of meditative and mindfulness techniques to help our kids reclaim their brains, and their lives.

A great message

This book will hopefully make great impacts in families all over.
The author's ego, patriarchy & Christian hegemony are a bit hard to look past when going through chapters.
The main messaging overall is very important, highly valuable & meant to increase quality of life.

Recommended reading for parents

The speaker is a bit tedious, but the information in this book is great. I encourage everyone to read it and to take action to stop living in a world of screen zombies who pretend to be "connected," but the reality is the opposite.

Must read for all parents.

This is a very thoughtful book. I like the fact that the author has practical experience and is not just a researcher.

A must read MORE THAN ONCE ‼️

This book is so full of information that one listening would not do it justice. It is so thought-provoking, it scares me as a grandparent to think about my grandchildren and where their future is headed. To read this book during the pandemic and unrest around The United States made a lot of sense. There are a lot of a-ha moments and I question what has happened to the generation that is rioting and protesting how much of this connection has caused how they think. I will be sure my three sons read this book, and hope their children are disconnected from their devices there’s valuable information in this book for raising children today.

Great Reminder!

This books gives the evidence as to why we need to really pay attention to what are kids are seeing and hearing. It matters. I asked my 11 year old son to listen to parts of it so he could learn too!

Need to Disconnect to Reconnect and Engage our Society

Very well written with a lot of examples of how parents can reconnect with their youth.

BIASED RANT BASED ON PERSONAL STORIES

While much of what Kersting says may be true regarding screen addictions, he's basically just ranting on and on about how things were so much better during the days of his youth. He frequently talks about the ruin of the "American family". Clearly, he's imposing his right-wing ideologies throughout and it's evident in his self-righteous writing style. He tells readers what we all must do and think to change, but makes exceptions for his own shortcomings with screen time. This is his biased, passionate, right-winged rant that uses an excessive amount of personal stories to back-up his views, while weaving in a few references to research studies on the topics, yet without ANY reference to the counter-arguments or counter-studies. Just a bitter older man missing the good old days in the good ol USA. SKIP THE BRAINWASH.
