Publisher's summary

Are you a high potential charting your course within your current organization, a leader trying to jump-start innovative thinking in your company? Or are you ready to do something new? Consider this simple yet powerful idea: disruptive companies and ideas upend markets by doing something truly different - they see a need, an empty space waiting to be filled, and they dare to create something for which a market may not yet exist.

An expert in driving innovation via personal disruption, Whitney Johnson will help you understand how the frameworks of disruptive innovation can apply to you: If you want to be successful in unexpected ways, follow your own disruptive path. Dare to innovate. Dream big dreams. Do something astonishing. Disrupt yourself.

In this audiobook you will learn how to apply these frameworks to building a business, a career - and you. We are living in an era of accelerating disruption - those who can manage the S-curve waves of learning and maxing out will have a competitive advantage. But this is a skill set that needs to be learned. Disrupt Yourself will help people cope with the unpredictability of disruption and use it to their competitive advantage.

Critic reviews

" Disrupt Yourself reads like a handbook for innovation: It shows the incredible value of recognizing what you are good at and finding unexpected ways to apply those strengths to the marketplace. The dramatic 'jumps' that Johnson encourages us to take truly form the basis of creativity and success." (Steve Wozniak, cofounder, Apple, Inc., and chief scientist, Primary Data)

So helpful to those considering career disruption

So thankful that I read this book. I have already started the process of a major career disruption and live daily with defending my decision to all who know me. Hearing the author's words and examples of those who have successfully come through their disruption helps me to feel understood, supported, and more positive about my future. Thank you, Whitney.

Very disruptive and thus helpful!

The concept of the S curve and how it affects our personal and work life is fascinating. Well worth a listen!

It's ok

Nothing new, but not a bad primer. The advantage of this book is that it's a fast read and gets one thinking about personal innovation.
But it's pretty generic and the narrator sounds computer generated.

Another great book by Whitney Johnson!

Loved this book! I like this format better than the first book, with more of her own experiences. My only "complaint" is that it wasn't longer! Great job.

narration was drab. content solid. writing more words to meet minimum word requirement; terse reviews apparently not allowed

News you can use! Smart, approachable & helpful.

Would you listen to Disrupt Yourself again? Why?

This book is full of little truths that spoke to me. On second listen, more truth nuggets for growth stood out. A lot of books like this talk AT you, this book does more than just provide tips, it opens your mind. Johnson takes you on her journey (highs and lows) and her story is relatable; so much so that I saw myself in the narrative. My story is different but this book reminds me of lessons to be learned from my past and suggests new ways to be excited about the future!! YES I WOULD LISTEN TO IT AGAIN — AND I HAVE :-)

What other book might you compare Disrupt Yourself to and why?

7 Habits for Highly Effective People, by Stevan Covey, comes to mind when I think of a book I might compare Disrupt Yourself. But they are different. I feel this book is more universal in that it speaks to woman and men. Although Covey's book is not exclusionary, Johnson's book is so approachable that it just feels more universal to me.

Which character – as performed by Cyndee Maxwell – was your favorite?

N/A

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My "extreme reactions" were "ah-ha" moments. I didn't ever cry; there were parts that gave me a chuckle. Mostly my mind was swirling with how to make my pretty good life even better. :-)

Any additional comments?

This is the PERFECT audio book because it opens up creative and accessible portals to self-betterment. It's great when you can give it your full attention but also great while cooking, painting and commuting (all things I did the first time through the recording). My life is better for having listened, and re-listened, to this book!

Interesting book but not as intriguing or instructive as others I have read. If you are looking to change your mindset about change it is a good book.
