About this listen

Sometimes history is better left buried...

Six months after barely escaping a nightmare, Kira Hanson is ready to take the trip of a lifetime—one she hopes will answer questions about her father's clandestine work recovering art stolen during World War II. But before she boards her flight, she's waylaid by a friend in need and finally comes face-to-face with the Navy SEAL who saved her six months ago and then ghosted her.

Lieutenant Commander Randall Fallon is thrilled to cross paths with the shy art historian, but within minutes of their reunion he learns she's in danger once again. Uneasy with the idea of her embarking on a trip to track down art thieves on her own, he just might have to reprise his role as undercover bodyguard and follow her to Europe posing as an art buyer.

Things heat up between Kira and Rand when he tracks her down in Malta, but it soon becomes clear that Rand's instincts were correct: Kira's digging into her father's secrets has unearthed an unexpected enemy.

Excellent Audiobook!

Rachel Grant is an excellent author. I feel it's a privilege to be able to be a part of her audio team now. I have enjoyed listening to a few of her audiobooks books in the past through the Audible Plus Catalog . This was the fist in this series that I've listened to so far. I definitely want to get the first two! I was glad to be on the road so I could listen without many interruptions as I was completely invested in the characters and the storyline. The twists had me on the edge of my seat. A suspenseful romance that is worth a relistening in the future.

Nicol Zanzarella and Greg Tremblay are both new to me narrators. Their performances were emotional and brought this audiobook to life. Perfection.

Danger, romance, intrigue, and education

I received this book free from the author in exchange for posting a review. I am not receiving any payment for this review.

Rachel Grant has done it again. I cannot say enough good things about her writing style. This book is good as a stand alone, but great if you read the others in this series and even more excellent if you read the Flashpoint series as well as the Evidence series. I always love hearing little snippets about characters from the other books. I was so happy when Rand made an appearance in the last book, I took a liking to him in the Flashpoint series. When I heard that Rand and Kira were getting their own story I was ecstatic. It was totally worth the wait. It was also a fun listening experience because my maiden name is Stultz (I haven’t seen this book in print so I don’t know if the spelling is the same) but it’s pronounced the same. I’m always happy with Rachel’s books because not only do you get an amazing story, you also learn something. I love knowledge that she has and shares with us.

One final thing, Nicol & Greg, as always, do such a good job in bringing the characters to life.

Kira and Rand's story is lush with drama, danger,

This is the first book I have listened to / read in this series. Though part of a series it does a good job as a standalone read, I would have liked to enjoy the books in chronological order for maximum nuance and enjoyment.
Kira and Rand's story is lush with drama, danger, duplicity, secrets and more. Kira wants answers, her quest to obtain them leads her into perilous situations. Rand realizes that intelligence and determination may not be enough as Kira travels halfway around the world. It soon becomes clear that Kira and Rand make significant discoveries that involve not just people they care about, but the country they call home. Amidst all the intensity Kira and Rand find that together they are a perfect pairing. The narration kept me engaged in this entertaining story.

Smart & Sexy Series for the Summer

Bottom Line Up Front (to use some military jargon): This is a great book and excellent continuation of the Evidence: Under Fire series. Two thumbs up for the narrators and the story!
I re-listened to the Evidence, Flashpoint, and Evidence: Under Fire stories in anticipation of this book coming out. You must listen to the two previous Under Fire books before listening to this book or you won't get a lot of the context of the story (the Before the Storm prequel is also great). I dislike getting into a series out of order, so I would recommend the other books first, particularly the Flashpoint books, as that is where Fallon and the characters that make up the Valkyries are first introduced (Fallon is only briefly mentioned in those books). Evidence characters also make cameos in the Under Fire books.
Onto the story--Fallon is my favorite hero of this series and I really enjoyed how Kira's character developed throughout the story. I'm not going to give away any spoilers and list any plot points, though I will say I wasn't completely surprised by how the plot played out. One point of note, the two main characters aren't the only POVs we get in this story--as events are playing out, we also get the POV of secondary characters (one of the main reasons you have to read the other Under Fire books first).
I love both the narrators, and they did a fantastic job reading the characters. I really enjoy the dual narration and am glad to see that becoming more popular.
If you are looking for a new series and want something smart, well-researched, fun and sexy, then this is the series you are looking for!

Mystery, Romance and Action

Romantic Suspense at it’s best. From the start of this audio, I was entranced in the story. I knew I had to pay attention or I was going to miss some clues! Randall and Kira finally are able to admit how they feel about each other and pursue the happiness they both deserve. However, the timing of these revelations might have been delayed due to circumstances beyond their control. Get ready for twists, suspense and a great overall audiobook!

There was never a dull moment as the story gripped my attention from the first words

A captivating story full of action, danger, edge of your seat suspense, twists and turns as crazy revelations are revealed, and of course love and passion as Kira and Randall finally reveal their feelings for each other. There was never a dull moment as the story gripped my attention from the first words as the narrators brought the characters to life. Greg Tremblay is one of the narrators I really enjoy listening to, and Nicol Zanzarella is new to me and did a great job as well.

Intriguing Plot. Good Narration!

I had the very strong sense I should have read the previous books in the series before this one. This was not a cliffhanger, but I felt like I may have missed the significance of some references because this was the first book in the series that I listened to or read. I do feel this can be read as a stand alone, as the couple did resolve the issue at hand and get their HEA.

This was a political, military romance that was heavier on the romance than I expected. Being perfectly honest, I was not feeling Kira's character at all until about the 50+% into the book. I also have to wonder if that was because I started at book 3.

I thought Kira was an incredibly immature, silly woman. She was supposed to be almost 40 years old. Basically, the way the book began with Rand and Kira, I would think Kira would have been much more safety conscious. She seemed to let pride, hurt feelings, and ego take the place of common sense.

Kira had been kidnapped, then rescued, then had someone who specifically wanted to kill her. What does she do but run off to Malta by herself? It seemed to me she would be happy to have Rand there to protect her, or just to watch her back. Especially considering how she had never left the country before.

I can understand why Rand did not tell her some things. Kira seemed to have a tendency to fly off the handle. After she settled down, it became a much easier book to listen to and dig into the plot.

I did have a bit of a problem keeping track of the characters for a while. This book had a lot going on. There was espionage, politics, art theft, art history, military secrets, danger, deceit, action, suspense, mystery, and regular secrets. 2 things I knew with certainty because it was often repeated. Malta was really hot in the summer, and Kira blossomed when she was in her element.

The book was still entertaining, and I enjoyed the descriptions, intrigue, and mystery. I did think the narrators did a good job and their narration enhanced the story for me. I would give this book 3.75 stars mainly because it took me so long to get on board with Kira, and not really dislike her.

I voluntarily listened to and reviewed the Advanced Listener Copy of this book.
