About this listen

How can a meek wallflower help a returning war hero whose dreams are plunged into darkness?

Mary Bloomfield has no illusions. Her chances for matrimony have long since passed. Still, her circumstances are pleasant enough, especially now that she has found purpose in assisting her father with his medical practice in England's beautiful Lake District. Even without love, it's a peaceful life.

That is until Adam Edgerton returns to the sleepy district. This decorated war hero did not arrive home to acclaim and rest, but to a new battle against the repercussions of an insidious disease. Mary's caring nature cannot stand to see someone suffer - but how can she help this man see any brightness in his future when he's plunged into melancholic darkness?

Adam wants no charity, but he's also no coward. If this gentle woman can work hard, how can he do less? Together they struggle to find a way forward for him. Frustration and antipathy slowly develop into friendship and esteem. Then a summer storm atop a mountain peak leads to scandal - and both Mary and Adam must search the depths of their closed hearts for answers if they hope to find any future path with happiness at its end.

Absolutely Amazing!

Few books are written about what it's like go through the heart-rending time of the testing of your faith in God.
The main characters are Adam and Mary. Both are people of strong faith. Both need to be in each other's lives because they are fated to be a couple once they heal.
This book is very well written. When they speak or even think about their beliefs you know they mean it. The book even has examples of pretenders that use faith to promote their own agenda. There is a huge difference!
If you want a true blue book written about faith and romance...This is the one.

Loved loved, loved this book,

This was such an enjoyable clean historical love story. Unusual, creative & wonderful. The characters are sooo endearing yet the elements of complex issues keeps you on edge. Wonderful, only slight negative is I do not like the narrator’s male voice , otherwise GREAT BOOK!

Loved This Story…

The reader was too slow, but the story tender, Christ honoring, and uplifting (in the end).

Narrator — 👎

It was truly a struggle to “ignore” the injection of long sighs or sing song delivery. Stayed with it to the end but will note the narrators name to make sure an other offering is not so annoying.

Lots of heavy topics, but the story grew on me

The narrator was hard to understand at first, but after a couple chapters you get used to her. Many heavy and serious topics. The book would’ve benefited for more happy lighthearted events sprinkled throughout to balance the heavy somber ones. But after chapter 10, I started to like the book a little bit more and decided to finish it. I appreciated all the scripture and God references. I did have rewrite a few things in my mind to make it a happier ending. lol But I won’t say what, in case it’d spoil it for those who haven’t listened yet.

Excellent story, excellent narration

Story -
A book hasn’t made me cry in a long time, but this one did. She reaches the depths of human emotion and struggles wonderfully.

Narration -
Hang in there with Mary Sarah. The way she reads the chapters is not the way she reads the story. I love her distinctions in characters, and she is my favorite male voice (from a female narrator). She is excellent!

Great book terrible performance

She literally sounds like a snake talking with the S and the TH she adds to everything. God turns into Godth. Sad to sadth. it literally sounds like a snake is trying to talk. Almost felt like I was watching a Disney movie where a snake was trying to speak and then melancholy. She tries to add to her voice did not add anything at all. Love the story and hate the performance.

Narrator

I do not care for the narrator’s intonations. It does make her stand out, but…
