About this listen

A Gallup study found that 50 percent of resigning employees did so "to get away from their manager". The ones who don't quit become disengaged, creating a negative work environment costing US companies billions in lost productivity, each year.

Leaders in the 21st century need to understand that technical skills are not enough to be an effective manager. They need to able to demonstrate tactical empathy to create a more productive environment. This audiobook introduces listeners to the fundamentals of hostage negotiator leadership (HNL) which has, as its foundation, tactical empathy.

Inside this book, you'll learn 12 simple-to-execute skills that, if applied immediately, will have you operating at a level higher than most. Ego, Authority, Failure was authored for leaders who want actionable techniques to build trust-based influence in order to motivate and inspire. It is also shares cautionary tales for those in denial about the damage their ego and authority has on their organization.

Helped me get a better grasp on empathy.

Derek Gaunt picks up where Chris Voss's Never Split the Difference leaves off. It does reiterate the approach of Black Swan Group with the addition of going in-depth on explaining empathy. Derek does so from the viewpoint of servant leadership. The book has helped my greatly and I appreciate the work the author put in to explain how 'hostage negotiation leadership' can be applied to the work and family life. It's funny how these simple concepts are so often misunderstood and forgotten or undervalued. And to those who wrote negatively critical reviews, I wonder if we read the same book?

A+ on leadership

Great book on influence and even better on how to be a great leader, how to develop leaders, and how to spot and deal with egotistical leaders

this is a must-read book. and then reread

okay. I have listened to this book twice. now I am onto my third time listening to it. there is just a lot of good information within this book that I feel is important to gather. I especially like it the section where he talks about ego. Don't let your ego get the best of you and lose good employees because of your ego.

Great Message for Leaders

Good message for all leaders. Discusses an approach to leadership based on hostage negotiation which was a newer viewpoint that I hadn’t heard before. The book starts a bit slow to lay the foundation, but eventually gets to very helpful, concrete strategies towards the end.

A Natural Storyteller!

Terrific writing style, always enjoy stories associated to lessons and especially the end chapter recaps. The sign off at the end…was perfect! Always learning.

loved the ethos for a leader found in the end!

The structure provided for appropriate application of tactical empathy in leadership roles. Is something I have been searching for ever since Never split the Difference entered my consciousness. Thanks to this book I have finally found it.
