About this listen

In the fugue of deep meditation, Jaya Devi tumbles outdoors into a muggy south Florida dawn. Sliding on a pair of orange flip-flops, she cuts across a dirt path skirting the ashram lawn. She glances down as a fat black snake slithers up her bare leg, wrapping itself tight. Astonished, she pauses, exemplifying the yogi’s art of non-reaction, breathing and assessing. Here, we enter into the wild wisdom-experience of a modern yogi who uses each moment as fuel for personal transformation.

Embodied reveals an array of relevant, effective tools for thriving in today’s upside-down world. Part memoir, part thought leadership, part toolkit for modern living, Embodied is accessible, deep, darkly humorous, and inspiring. Swami tackles topics like how to change our relationship with our suffering and embody the courage to grow from it. Whether you’re a new yogi, a seasoned meditator, or someone struggling with the stress of contemporary living, Embodied inspires us to keep our cup half full while teaching us techniques to live a richer, more fulfilling life.

I didn’t think I could love this book more…

Reading the paper copy of this book, I didn’t think I could love it or Swami Jaya Devi more. As a student of Swami, I’m fortunate to be able to play her voice in my head while reading. With the audio book, it’s all of our great fortunes to hear it straight from Swami Jaya Devi’s mouth! A powerful, transformative memoir, teaching tool and guided meditation practice all in one. Truly not to be missed. Thank you Swami!!

Highly Recommend

Swami Jaya Devi’s book “Embodied” is a woven tapestry of person stories, guru lineage, ancient yogic teaching and experiential practices.

I loved this book and recommend to anyone on the yogic path or seeking liberation from their monkey mind.

A Beautiful Meditation

The most beautiful and impactful stories are read in a beautiful tone and cadence. I adored every word. Every breath. Every practice. This book is soothing to the soul and opening to the heart. So much wisdom shared in these stories. Swami Jaya Devi is embodied in her practice, and her words and presence forever change me. You can feel her excellent energy radiate through her spoken word. This book is one I will return to often to let the blessings sink in deeper.

Inspiring and heart-opening wisdom teachings

I love how relatable and human the lived experiences are in this book. Swami Jaya Devi is a natural storyteller and has demonstrated a mastery of applying Patanjali's 8 limb path to an urban setting, making these ancient yogic teachings accessible and relevant to the modern world. Anyone who is deeply curious and open to an unconventional way of living with reality would benefit from this book.

Timelessness in Real Time

Wisdom traditions are defined by their ability to continue and to transcend the limitations of their origins, thus holding relevance and value across time and cultural boundaries. Swami Jaya Devi’s memoir builds bridges between yoga’s ethical codes (yamas and niyamas) described in Patanjali’s ancient Yoga Sutras and her life as an Atlanta “urban yoga monk”, spiritual seeker, and teacher. Yoga in the West can mistakenly be viewed as simply a physical workout or self-care practice, and Embodied goes deeper than that superficial view as a reminder that the essence of yoga practice and embodiment require alignment between body, mind, and spirit, holding the opportunity for deep transformation.
