Publisher's summary

For better or worse, a solar eclipse brought humans and paranormal beings together, sparking one woman’s battle to master magic or lose our world, in this riveting serialized adventure from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hollows.

As time has passed, Dr. Renee Caisson has begun to see the demonic, alien August as more than a research subject or an unlikely colleague—they’ve become friends. And together, she and August have helped the two societies of Nextdoor and Earth through the confusion of first contact, the danger of misunderstandings, and the anger of mistreatment.

But when a popular blogger and conspiracy theorist twists August’s words, an uproar ensues, turning a powerful section of human society against the Neighbors—and resulting in Renee’s house arrest. “To protect you,” her could-be boyfriend, Major Jackson says, though that’s not how Renee sees it.

Torn between duty and friendship, August jumps Renee to freedom using the labyrinth, fully aware the journey might reveal more to her than she should know. The wily Neighbor has pieced together that Renee has been unconsciously using their magic, a fact that, if revealed, will cause more, not less conflict between their worlds.

For if the people of Earth can master their magic and exile his people again, the Neighbors will not survive.…

The voice

The voice is hard to hear and understand. when she mumbles and gets gravelly at the same time.

Vocal fry run amuck!

The narrator speaks too slowly but worse is her over use of the vocal fry affectation. Here are a couple of reasons why it is not a good thing. First, in this case, the narrator is using it as the main way to distinguish the male voices from the females. Using it for August’s voice as way to portray unsureness of speaking a newly learned language is ok and even appropriate. But in this third book, there are at least 3 different male characters using the same affect making them indistinguishable without the 3rd person identifiers. Show a lack of imagination and laxness in character development by the talent. Second, it just plain unpleasant to listen too. I don’t want to listen to Jackson make a 2 second creaking sizzling sound everytime he begins to speak. Basically once you hear it, you can’t unhear it. Due to the slow reading pace I had to speed it up from 1.0(actual speaking speed) to 1.10, the vocal frying is slightly shorter. I don’t think I could handle more of it by resetting to default pace.

The storyline was very interesting.

Good story. Bad narration. The premise is great but the narrator is difficult to understand, as well as annoying. The slow pace, low voice, and vocal fry - enough already.

Narrator is soft spoken

Other than the narrator being difficult to hear, I love this story! Can't wait to hear more from this world

Just one more!

This series is so captivating, it makes me sad to have finished it this far, but hopefully, there is a chance for one more in this series! The characters are excellently written and the story is unpredictable, but keeps you drawn in.

I LOVE THIS STORY I hate the readers voice

I have been a Kim Harrison fan for years. I was nervous about this new series but I need, like, a hundred more, immediately. The narrator though, is a bad fit. Everyone sounds like old raspy grannies....everyone. it is difficult to understand and wayy too low all the time. I was thrown out of the story all the time because it felt so wrong for the characters. Too much rasp, too wavery and shakey like she is about to cry all the time. I won't be getting more audiobooks if it's done by the same narrator, it's just too hard to understand and stay in the story. it's a great story that needs a corresponding voice.

Excellent new read from Kim Harrison

More more more!!! What a great 3 part story. Kim has such a gift for wrapping you into her worlds and getting you deeply invested in the story! I hope there is more!

The plot is thickening

I love KH as an author, she makes characters that are likeable and bad guys that drive you crazy. She creates friendships and rifts and gives you just enough mystery to wish you could binge the rest of the series! Where is it! Can’t wait to read the next one.
