Publisher's summary

Many people fear public speaking more than death. Most wish they could do it better, or at least avoid the sweating, stuttering jitters that plague them before any presentation or speech. Vikas Jhingran has been there. He was so poor at speaking in public that his supervisor wouldn't let him make presentations to clients - even when he had done all the work. Surprisingly, few professional speakers and presenters understand speeches or presentations at a fundamental level. Their overly prescriptive approach actually ends up confusing the speech and the tools that are used to deliver it, instead of connecting with the essential part of speaking - that which engages listeners with the message and the emotions that go with it. By focusing on the most important aspect of communication - the transfer of emotion - Emote:

  • Develops an emotion-driven approach that will help you deliver a powerful, effective message despite any perceived handicaps
  • Encourages introverts and non-native speakers to find their voices and deliver impactful speeches
  • Clarifies the roles of common speaking tools and shows how to use them effectively
In Emote, Vikas presents an emotion-based approach that will change the way you think about verbal communications. Emote will help you gain the confidence you need to stand in the spotlight and "wow" clients or executives, create connections, and get your message across to anyone.

A fantastic book by the World Champion of Public Speaking

As I went through Emote, I applied the techniques suggested in a speech I had. It was not easy for me to conduct that speech as I went through a deep emotional state with the loss of our best friends, a family of 4, in the Ukraine plane crash, that you might have heard in the news. My initial intent of the speech was to excite the audience for the start of the year and give them tools to succeed. However, after reading the book, first of all, I decided to move ahead with speech and express my feelings from the heart. I didn't mind engaging the audience in the same emotion I experienced, although it was the deep emotion of sorrow.

I followed the advice on the Emote about starting with a story, taking the audience on a journey, and then end on the same point. It worked really well. Taking the audience in an emotional roller coaster was another thing that worked so well. I saw them cry, laugh, and thinking as well.

Another thing that I learned from Vikas was the method he suggested for the pauses. When I was in Toastmasters, I always had the challenge of making meaningful pauses. I was not comfortable with the moment of silence and moved to the next point so fast. The way that he described it in his book finally taught me how to pause.

Thanks to Vikas, the result of the speech was terrific. The audience came to me after the speech, gave hugs, and thanked me for the valuable lessons I shared with them.

This book has given me the courage to speak out of the heart and taking my audience on an emotional journey.
