About this listen

Former forensic scientist Lisa Black taps her expertise for this tale of investigator Theresa MacLean and the perplexing case she tackles. A dead woman has been found in the woods, and the cause of death is unclear. The leading theory is that she wandered off and froze. But Theresa senses something far more sinister.

Then a former boyfriend of the woman's tries to obtain custody of the woman's daughter. Obsessed with the little girl, he also suspects foul play in her mother's death, and now he and Theresa believe the daughter may be in danger of being killed, too. With the girl's life on the line, Theresa must search for evidence of murder - any evidence - before it's too late.

Critic reviews

"This fast-paced thriller features a lot of detailed forensics with a rip-roaring ending." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Lisa Black wows us with another tense and uputdownable thriller. She is, quite simply, one of the best storytellers around." (Tess Gerritsen)

The story is OK and held my interest but wasn't edge of your seat by any means. And the narrator... For at least the first half, she sounded as if she had just picked up the book and started recording. I am used to such high quality narrators (usually) through Audible and Ms. Cuervo was not very good. She seemed to get more in the groove with the characters by the second half and alter her voice and speed, etc. a bit, so it was better. I'll get the next book in the series but not sure if I'll get it as an Audible book. It would be one you could listen to on double time, though.

The author creates a perfect mix of interesting detail and taut mystery. I live in Cleveland and appreciate the nuance with which she portrays the city I've grown to love. Having exhausted the lists of Lee Child, Harlan Coben, and J.R. Robb, I needed something new. I found it with Lisa Black. I've now read or listened to all of Lisa Black's books that I can get. Like the city of Cleveland, she's a hidden gem of an author.

A Great Find!

This is more than murder mystery; the interesting characters and well written storyline made me want to listen to the next book too.

Very Good 2nd book in series

I enjoyed this new (for me) writer and I thought her mystery interesting. Having grown up in Ohio, I liked this was set in Cleveland. Hope to see more of Lisa Black's work on audible

Good mystery

Lisa Black books are fine for times when you want a mildly interesting plot that develops a at a glacial pace. In other words--background listening. However this book is virtually unlistenable due to halting narration. The reader seems to be seeing the text for the first time as it is recorded. Slowing to pronounce common words like she is reading in front of a fourth grade class. Makes you appreciate a well read audiobook all the more. Just not this one.

Slow paced story with poor narration

You can literally tell the narrator is just reading words from the book- she sounds robotic. I could barely concentrate on the book because it was so bad, to the point I'm literally looking up anything Alma Cuervo does so I never have to hear her narrate another thing again. Seriously- the worst.

Worst narration
