Publisher's summary

Weaving together herbal and medical traditions from around the world into a singular cohesive model, this groundbreaking audiobook guides herbal practitioners to a comprehensive understanding of the practice and philosophy of healing with herbs.

Sajah Popham presents an innovative approach to herbalism that considers the holistic relationship among plants, humans, and the underlying archetypal patterns in nature. Organized in five parts moving from the microcosmic to the universal, this work explores a unique integration of clinical herbalism, Ayurveda, medical astrology, spagyric alchemy, and medical and esoteric traditions from across the world into a truly holistic system of plant medicine.

A balance of the heart and the mind, the science and spirit of people and plants, Evolutionary Herbalism provides a holistic context for how plants can be used for transformational levels of healing for the body, spirit, and soul. For both the student herbalist and experienced practitioner, Popham's original perspectives guide listeners to a more intimate, synergistic, and intuitive relationship with the plant kingdom, people, and nature as a whole.

Critic reviews

"This is no simple compendium of herbal recipes and cures, but a book that digs deeply, exploring the roots of humanity’s spiritual and physical illness and the amazing power of plants to heal. Evolutionary Herbalism masterfully blends the metaphors of science, metaphysics, medical astrology, and alchemy into a deeply insightful journey that takes us to the very heart and soul of herbalism and provides a holistic model for understanding people and plants." (Rosemary Gladstar, author of Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner's Guide)

"Well researched at the scholarly level, Evolutionary Herbalism includes the author's own profound experiential knowledge of the subject. Pushing the boundary of modern herbal medicine, this book provides us with a new vision of the herbal realm teeming with life and intelligence that will work with us as a partner and powerful ally once we understand how to initiate that contact. Sajah Popham provides us with a wealth of hard-won tips and guidance to open that wider vista of the herbal realm." (Robert Allen Bartlett, author of Real Alchemy: A Primer of Practical Alchemy)

"Sajah Popham has written an intelligent and genuine book in which his deep caring for the world and the suffering of people shines through. Evolutionary Herbalism is a wide-ranging, synergistic exploration of multiple systems of traditional herbal healing." (Stephen Harrod Buhner, author of Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm)

Interested in Book Not Narrator

The narrator cannot pronounce a good deal of the words, including cayenne and mycelium. There are words I’m trying to learn that I can’t be sure are even pronounced correctly. And it’s hard to identify what word he is mispronouncing, so sometimes whole descriptions don’t make any sense.

I love how much this book covers. There’s so much to learn in here and I’d like to be able to understand it.

Holistic herbalism

Highly recommended!

This is a really well put together book and I really enjoyed listening to it. I was disappointed that Sajah was not the narrator as he talks so well in his pod casts and you tube videos and I would have preferred to hear him read the book.

I never understood all the aspects of Herbalism and how to choose herbal remedies prior to this book. It was an amazing journey looking at Energetics including the 3 principles, 5 elements, and 7 planets and how to use them all to find the most suitable herbal remedy.

I do feel like I would still like to buy a copy of the book as a reference guide as there is so much information.

Thank you for sharing all your amazing knowledge Sajah.

Pretty good.

Not particularly a good book for learning herbalism but a great book to provoke thought in established herblists. At times times the writing style felt a little drawn out but overall good. I love the narrator.

A Compelling Peek Into Herbalism

If you are looking for a book that will bring your awareness to plants, planets and medicine all within the concepts of Ayurveda, Alchemy and Astrology then this will not disappoint. I will say that the narrator’s voice was not to my liking as I have listened to many lectures by the author and prefer it over the narrator’s.

Found performance distracting from the content

I love Sajah and his work. He explains herbalism in a down to earth (as it should be) manner. However, the narrator is very distracting. It easy for me to tune out the reading and needing to go back and re-listen and find myself tuning out again. I have given up on listening to the book twice since I purchased it. I would suggest purchasing the paper or digital copy of the book instead of this recorded version.
Go to Sajah's website and join his Meteria Medica Monthly subscription. It is more valuable than anything I have subscribed to in the past when it comes to Herbal education.

So much content!

I do wish Sajah Popham would have narrated, because his enthusiasm would have kept me engaged. The narrator’s voice is very soothing and made it too easy to me to drift into my own thoughts, but I never feel that way listening to Sajah’s podcast. Eventually the book was juicy enough to stick with it. I ended up buying a hard copy for reference, but it’s well organized enough to look back in the audio chapters as well.

Authority on Herbalism

This is the best book on herbalism that I have read. It explains herbalism through the lenses of many different theories. I highly recommend! The performance was very different from the authors voice. The pace and cadence were perfect.
