Publisher's summary

Brooke Markham needs a man. A real good man.

But she's not looking for a keeper. She's too busy kicking ass, running an empire, and caring for her ailing father to spend time with men who want annoying things like relationships and commitment and...conversation.

Brooke knows what she wants, and it's not a future with the growly barkeep.

JJ Harniczek needs money. A whole lot of money.

He's determined to launch his distillery, expand his tavern, and put Talbott's Cove on the foodie tourism map. But there's no way he's asking Brooke for a dime. Not before he takes her to bed and definitely not after.

JJ knows where he's headed, and the blonde bombshell isn't about to change that. Not until she changes his entire world.

Return to Talbott's Cove with this steamy rom-com stand-alone!

Thoroughly enjoyable!!

Brooke and JJ’s fiery relationship is loaded with smack talk, sarcasm, and self deprecating humor that leads to the combustible sexual game of cat and mouse that drives Kate Canterbary’s story. Brooke is beautiful, brilliant, and ballsy but her outer confidence is a ruse that hides a fearful heart. JJ was a little harder to love because he has no patience for social niceties but he’s an interesting combination of grumpy, irascible, and tender hearted when it comes to his old high school crush. I loved the banter between best friends Annette and Brooke, the uncomfortable man to man talks between JJ and Jackson, and the brotherly relationship between JJ and Nolan. Kate’s books always make me laugh and swoon while they help me understand more about the human condition. I listened to the audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed Virginia Rose’s narration of Brooke’s vulnerability just as much as I appreciated Jeffrey Kafer’s interpretation of JJ’s snarky personality. Their character delivery was spot on and well done.

Enemies to Lovers

This is the epitome of an Enemies to Lovers trope, only taken to a whole new extreme with the level of brattiness the main female character Brooke exudes just to seemingly save face. JJ's surliness does not take a back seat in this either. Both are so made for each other it's a wonder they didn't get there again sooner.
The story brought smiles to my face albeit watery at times. the banter and snark between best friends Annette and Brooke balance out the steam and headbutting done in out out of the sheets with Brooke and JJ.
Jeffrey Kafer was a great fit as he has a style of narration that works best with no nonsense characters. Virginia Rose brought out the essence of Brooke's character, giving the perfect imbalance of hard and soft at the right times for the story.

Far Cry

Another great installment in the Talbot's Cove series. Brook & JJ's angsty love-to-hate/hate-to-love you relationship comes across as hard and aggressive but they both need to hold on to their protective armor until the moment they realize it's too heavy to maintain without being able to lean on each other.

Jeffrey Kafer's narration at times seemed like a Walter Cronkite news delivery, but most of the time it fit JJ's crotchety bar-keep character. Virginia Rose's narration of Brooke was great.

Male narrator is totally miscast

I had to stop listening to this book because the male narrator is narrating a Humphrey Bogart type murder mystery and the female narrator is narrating a romance novel (which is what I wanted to listen to). It was like trying to listen to two different books at the same time. Whoever decided to cast the male narrator in this role should get out of the business.

Great Story

Kate Canterbary is my new favorite author. I have enjoyed all of her books, many in both Print and audio form. What strikes me about this audio book is that the male performer’s approach seemed very much like a war news correspondent. His cadence and timbre were consistently harsh and repetitive. The only time he changed his delivery was when he was voicing characters other than Jed. The female voice actor was good, though I had some trouble differentiating the female characters. Still, it was overall quite enjoyable.

Small town romance that sizzles

The story that I have been waiting for since Fresh Catch and what a story it was. Brooke is feisty and snarky but is hiding a huge secret from everyone in Talbot Cove and JJ the barkeep is a grump who just want to enrich the sleepy town with fresh ideas. This enemies to lovers has the hottest hate sex I have ever read. Virginia Rose is truly a voice artist and her Brooke is everything I could ask for and more. I was chuckling so hard during those text stream between the soul sisters because seriously Kate writes the best dialogue in texts. Jeffrey definitely has the grumpy Maine thingy down pat. When the book is cast well the narrators can transcend the words and emotions and they certainly did.

Great book.

Far Cry is an enjoyable book. Set in a small New England town with people full of history of the town, its people, the landmarks and all the gossips. Quick, easy to read and very enjoyable book.

Very solid

I really liked Virginia Rose’s narration but Jeffrey Kafer doesn’t do the best job distinguishing between JJ and Brooke sometimes and it got a little confusing.

couldn't get engaged

I struggled to listen to the narration. I couldn't get past first chapter.
Might be great book, she wasn't able to engage my attention. Might be just me.
