About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Renowned gamester and the first to admit that he is entirely void of a romantic disposition, Max Ravenscar regards all eligible females with indifference and unconcern.

But when he meets the woman his young cousin Adrian is bent on marrying - the beautiful Deborah Grantham, mistress of her aunt's gaming house - he finds that none of his experience in risk and gambling has prepared him for such a worthy opponent.

Really love the characters and always the end of georgette hare books! And of course a fisty girl

Love an old fashioned romance

This is what a True Regency romance should have: excellent dialogue, plot twists and troubled heroines and leading men. Love, love love! Ms. Heyer remains the Queen of Regency par excellence!!

Bravo!

I always tell people Heyer is equal parts Jane Austin, a good 1930’s screwball comedy ie Brining up Baby and a heavy dose of charm. If one of those appeal to you take the chance and try to not fall in love. Favorites - Grand Sofie, Frederica, Cotillion

Heyer is a master

this is one of georgette heyers better stories. and fortunately the narration on this is better than the previous recording. the narrator did a pretty good job with the voices but pronounced some of the words wrong. I'm not sure why the makers of audio books got rid of all the old, really amazing recordings of heyers books. and I'm not sure why all the new narrators are subpar. but at least this recording is better than the old one.

love georgette heyer

This is one of my favorites by Heyer, and Daphne did a splendid rendering of it. It is now one of my favorite audiobooks as well! Each character had their own voice, and all of Heyer’s wit and humor was faithfully portrayed as it should be; a delight to listen to. 5 stars!!

Fabulous!

The story was excellent, and the reader VERY good. The characters Georgette Heyer creates are so well drawn, the dialect and setting so historically accurate, that hearing this book was like going back in time and really being there.

So good

I am an English Major! and therefore qualified to pronounce that Georgette Heyer is not a real writer and her romances cannot be considered literature, and furthermore no English Major would waste her time ... WAIT! Only I find hat nearly 5 decades of snobbish toiling amongst the literati have deprived me of the most realistic and sparkling (who knew you could have both) dialogue, and the most unobtrusive yet fascinating description I've had the privilege to read. Plots may be a bit too pat, but they are also ingenious puzzles. Unalloyed happily-ever-afters they may be, but they are always great fun. Miss Heyer should be named among the giants of literature. No, I am not being snide.

Delighted!

The newer Heyer recordings are very hit or miss. The narrator on this one doesn’t seem to get Georgette Heyer. The text is over-acted and the cadence is jerky, as though the reader lacks the breath to read an entire sentence without breaking it into separate phrases. I’ll be returning this one.

Dragged down by the narration

Maybe because I loved Cotillion story so much that listening to this story after was a let down. I couldn’t connect to main characters. I will try reading the book to see if there’s a difference in my opinion.

Just ok for me
