About this listen
Michelle was a young single mother when she was kidnapped by a local school bus driver named Ariel Castro. For more than a decade afterward, she endured unimaginable torture at the hand of her abductor. In 2003 Amanda Berry joined her in captivity, followed by Gina DeJesus in 2004. Their escape on May 6, 2013, made headlines around the world.
Barely out of her own tumultuous childhood, Michelle was estranged from her family and fighting for custody of her young son when she disappeared. Local police believed she had run away, so they removed her from the missing persons lists fifteen months after she vanished. Castro tormented her with these facts, reminding her that no one was looking for her, that the outside world had forgotten her. But Michelle would not be broken.

Story
Two victims of the infamous Cleveland kidnapper share the story of their abductions, their decade in captivity, and their final, dramatic rescue. On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland area home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry...I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years". A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained in the basement.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Story
Beard's stunning debut is an epistolary novel written from 15-year-old Tess DeNunzio to her little sister Zoe. After Zoe's accidental death on September 11, 2001, a day so many others died, Tess' family is numbed by their personal tragedy. Already acutely aware of her odd place in a home where her mother and stepfather now have children of their own, Tess begins her letter as a means of figuring out her own life, from her two-hour-a-day hair and makeup ritual to her complicity in Zoe's death.

A peaceful summer night is shattered by gunfire as an unseen assailant tries to murder police officer John Busby. Though horribly wounded, Busby survives. But the perpetrator remains at large, meaning neither Busby, nor his wife, nor their three children are safe. Born into the beautiful bedlam of downtown New York in the eighties, iO Tillett Wright came of age at the intersection of punk, poverty, heroin, and art. This was a world of self-invented characters, glamorous superstars, and strung-out sufferers, ground zero of drag and performance art. Still, no personality was more vibrant and formidable than iO's mother's. Rhonna, a showgirl and young widow, was a mercurial, erratic glamazon. She was iO's fiercest defender and only authority in a world with few boundaries and even fewer indicators of normal life.

This harrowing account proved to be the most compelling evidence against Jeffs, showing the harsh realities of this closed community and the lengths to which Jeffs went in order to control the sect's women. Now, in this courageous memoir, Wall tells the incredible story of how she emerged from the confines of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints and helped bring one of America's most notorious criminals to justice.

Quite a horror story. Amazing she lived through it and came out of it capable of putting this book together.

Incredible courage. Excellent narrator.
I was not prepared for the extent of detailed graphic disclosure in this book. I can’t understand how anybody could have the courage and intestinal fortitude to survive these horrors and not be spending the rest of their lives in a mental institution.
The treatment is worse and more despicable than sex trafficking books I have read. These girls weren’t groomed, weren’t party girls, just girls who accepted a ride from a friend’s father. Michelle already had a horrible past through no fault of her own. Of the three girls, Michelle is the central characters totally deserving of our empathy.

Excellently written
How amazing that she could put into words her account of her captivity. I was unable to stop reading this book. My heart was inspired how she wouldn’t allow this animal abuser break her spirit. Bravo Michelle and God bless you.

Good story
The overall story was great. You really felt for the author and all she had gone through. I didn't like how the narrator read the story though. She made everything sound a bit childish and fragmented. Overall I would recommend though.

Strong women
This is the strongest young women I have ever heard of. She is so much more than what the press and news has made of her. She alone saved herself helped save the lives of the other girls daily. What she has been through and her forgiveness of the man that did those terrible things to her should be a lesson to us all as human beings. Good for you Michelle. I just hope to be half the woman you have become through all the trials of your life. Have sent this book to few other women to read including my own daughters. You are definitely a great role model in faith forgiveness and life as a woman. Thank you for sharing your painful story.

So very sad
My heart is broken for this young woman. It was pretty detailed so be aware of that. It can sometimes be tough to listen to, because of all the horrible things he did to her. At first I was thrown off by the narrator’s voice, but got used to it after awhile. Great book, just so sad.

Amazing!
I could tell Michelle Knight was an amazing person from seeing interviews on TV, but nothing could have prepared me for her insight, wit and wisdom in this book. Being locked up for 11 years surely could stunt a person but not Michelle. Tough as nails, she wouldn't allow 'dude' to break her spirit. Thank God she's alive to tell her story and encourage billions! I wish her well and I just know she will succeed!

Michelle Knight's audible book 1st rate
Would you consider the audio edition of Finding Me to be better than the print version?
Absolutely. I borrowed it from the Library and also bought it on Audible and after a few chapters I thought I would try listening to it. After listening to Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland re:Amanda and Gina I wasn't sure it this would be something I could finish listening to. But I'm very glad I did. This is a book worth supporting with our dollars and I wasn't sure why Michelle didn't want to be a part of the 1st book but since "the dude" hated her so much and treated her the worst she needed to give her own account. And for other reasons as well. I am not sorry at all that I listened to it because she is going to give her heart 100% to others and love others through her love of the Lord and I am grateful to know this as well.
Who was your favorite character and why?
No favorite character
What does Maria Cabezas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She does an amazing job of during the imprisonment speaking differently than after the escape and rescue. I realized this and even thought Maria could have had Michell's voice herself. Thank you everyone for doing such a good job on this most painful evil and awful time.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
All the abortions, rapes and abuse from the beginning of her life could have torn me in two but what moves me still is her love for God and I pray for Christ Jesus as well who gives her the love in her heart I sense she has.
Any additional comments?
Listen to the book. Do as Michelle says and watch out for these evil people and try to be there for children and people who are being hurt and need our help.

Traumatizing story
Michelle, you are a strong women inside to overcome life after inprisonment of demon. I kept listening I would of tried everything and death to free myself from that man. But I wasn't there and I cannot believe the things u lived thru. This is truely a great book, I wish that it was fiction. I pray God continues to make you strong and you enjoy many things in life. God Bless
