About this listen
Fire from the Sky is a post-apocalyptic fiction by N.C. Reed.
Clayton Sanders left home the minute he had his high school diploma in hand. He waited that long only because the Army wouldn't accept him without one. Now, 10 years later, he's home. Home with no warning, no advance notice, no anything after being gone 10 years with almost no contact with his family. Home carrying a secret that is burning him up from the inside. A secret that has pushed him to the brink, forcing him to become a criminal in order to be where his family needs him to be, even though they don't realize it yet. Because, Clayton knows something they don't. Something that hasn't happened, but will. Something that will burn everything it touches. And change the face of the world forever.
Excerpt from Hostile Fire:
William Shirley watched as the people he had assembled for what others were calling a "reconnaissance in force" gathered their equipment and shook down their ranks. He had combined three different "squads" into a new platoon of 31 people, adding that force to an established platoon of 35 more. They would head north in a small string of vehicles that included a school bus to investigate the situation north of the Alabama-Tennessee state line.
Shirley's group, the self-entitled "North Alabama People's Militia", had lost a great deal of personnel and equipment in that area, and he wanted to know why and to who. It was inevitable that the group would have to head north at some point in search of supplies. They had stripped their own area nearly bare over the last few months, and moving too far south was out of the question. While he considered Decatur to be part of their "territory", moving any further south than that risked a confrontation with the gangs of Birmingham, something his group lacked the strength for. There had already been a few skirmishes between the two groups, and Shirley was determined to avoid any more clashes with such a large and vicious outfit.
So, north it was, into rural middle Tennessee. The area immediately north of the line should be safe enough and resource-rich. That area was full of farms and livestock operations that should yield a good amount of food for his operation, and he meant to have it. If they waited too long, then someone stronger, either from Nashville or perhaps Chattanooga, might move into the area and declare it theirs. If the Militia wanted that territory and the goods it might provide, they had to act soon.
And tomorrow should be soon enough. Sixty-six heavily armed troops would move north and keep moving until they found opposition or else found something worth sending word for trucks to carry it back to the compound. If he was lucky, they would also find out who had killed his niece and his fellow board member's son. He looked forward to that. When he found whoever had killed his people, he would show them what a mistake they had made.

Before the lights went out, Jack Warrant never considered himself a prepper. That was someone on the edge, a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday cultist who had a fatalistic view of the world. He was neither a theorist nor a cultist. He was an optimist. At least that was what he told himself when the darker thoughts creeped into his psyche as he stared at the ceiling in the middle of the night. Whenever he started down the rabbit hole, he always clawed his way back into the sunlight.

Story
In the wake of the cataclysmic events that reshaped our world in 2020, a sense of relief washed over us all. By late 2023, I think we were ready to just live life again. I know I was. It was a time to make new friends and put the past to rest. Rayne and I hadn’t known each other long, but we were building a solid friendship, nothing more. It was our common interests that sent us on vacation together to my remote cabin. What we didn’t, couldn’t know, was that we were on a collision course with the end of the world as we knew it.

When the pandemic hit, nobody was expecting it to be as bad as it was. The economy barely survived the lockdowns, but it staggered along until civil unrest shattered people’s hope of better times to come. With it being an election year, more and more Americans were waking up to the idea that they truly were behind the curve. The hope was if they did not get sick, run out of money, or could avoid violent mobs, they would be fine.

THE BAD GUYS ARE COMING
This series is very enjoyable. I have just finished book 8. This particular book was very good. I liked all the prep work and tactics as well as the action. The story draws you into the family as if you are part of the Sanders clan. I was hooked by Odd Billy Todd and then the Parno books and honestly this series is now my favorite series of all time. Book one started off slow for me but by the end of book one, I was coming back for more. The author is truly a very good story writer. There are some slow points but what you think is a slow point will turn around later to be the background for the more riveting parts. It's hard to find good stories with characters you care about today. This has characters you love and characters you don't like or even hate. I think it was an excellent performance, the old man's voice, Clay's voice, Brick, all the voices are very good. I highly recommend this series.

Good series
I enjoyed this series. Well written and other than some static and occasional background noises the narrator preformed well. Story isn’t finished yet in my opinion and I hope the author will continue the story either in this series or perhaps another.

I'm loving the saga of the Sanders Family
I have now listened to each of the titles in this series and I am more engaged now than at the beginning. After listening to seven different takes on the end of the life as we know it via cataclysmic event, all different, this is the one I like the best. I love their grit and their willingness to keep putting one foot in front of the other to keep going at all costs. These are future pioneers just like the pioneers who walked across the continent in the 1840's and 50's. The dangers are real but the sense of family is strong. As I think about my pioneer relatives I hope they loved their family as much and were willing to sacrifice tor them also.
I will admit the first book I was not so sure about the narrator but now I really like him. He is right for this family, this story and this time. I would miss him if he were gone. As listeners we need to stretch ourselves in the books we choose and in the narrators also. I have a few books (over 2,000) and diversity is good. I think if you give him a chance you will really like him.

Recommendation - A Good Series to Listen or Read
I liked the Kindle and am always impatiently waiting for the Audible. Yes I purchase both as the Kindle comes out first :-) People who are interested in apocalypse CME/EMP disasters will enjoy reading and or listening to this series, which Book 1 hooks you from the start. As always, cannot wait for the next instalment :-)

Has gotten better
It’s still a little slow but more in the way of telling of things other than fighting bad survivors. Which can be pretty interesting. It seems Clay’s team are always come out on top, which I like, but those of you looking for losses or such on the good team are out of luck. Good guys suffer no casualties. The man/woman parts in the story are probably way to many. And I’m having a hard time keeping up with who’s who. But all in all a good listen. Will get the next.

Trying
If the rest of the books were not good this is where I would have stopped here. The main character Clayton is a whining cry baby. If I hadn't have met Lts like this one I would not have believed he was an Officer. Turns it into a Soap Opera instead of a post apocalypse action series.

Blah...
that's what would be 25% shorter if the author didn't they over explain everything and explain it multiple times also the narrator always sounds like he's out of breath and pauses too long and between sentences it gets to the point where it's getting very annoying listening to him I don't even think I'll probably buy the next books on audible I'll probably buy them and paperback and read them myself. also the stories all kind of end up the same good guys get ready bad guys come Good guys wipe them out, rinse and repeat. also the author needs to cut out the romance he's horrible at it. anytime of man or woman talks to each other everybody blushes

not his best
I think the author wrote it just to get something down on paper and get paid. I also didn't care for the fake laughter in the background which is common in this whole series.
