About this listen

On the planet Nuala, the scam that beguiling free-trader Silver has come to join has just been blown to the skies, along with the throne lines of three sovereign nations.

The last male heir of one throne line, Sheel Atare, is unprepared to rule, but he's quick to seize allies wherever he can - like the beautiful and dangerous Silver. Now Silver has to choose: stick to the scam, or get sucked into the struggle to save Nuala - and Sheel Atare's life.

I understand the comparisons now

I now see why people would compare this story to Dune, though it currently lacks the utter density of Dune, it does bring a Dune like flare to the title in its first book. Yet, on its own, I liked the story overall. It was a good listen/read. I would recommend it wholeheartedly to any fan of the Dune series or if you just like more dense and intrigue heavy titles.

Great story, annoying narrator

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

One of my favorite authors and a good story but just didn't enjoy the narrator. I know that's a personal choice for everyone, so don't let that stop you from trying the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Darame

Would you be willing to try another one of James Patrick Cronin’s performances?

Not Bad, But Not Great

Fires of Nuala has been with us a long time; published in 1988, rereleased in 2010 and hit Audible in Dec 2013. I was intrigued by a plot that includes assassinations, political intrigue and the promise of both mystery and action. Also, one of the main characters is a beautiful woman who is a con artist.

I found that I had to put in many long hours before the book became interesting and had trouble identifying with the characters. Way too perfect. Overall, not as exciting as I had hoped, but the entertainment value is decent.

Hard to Get into

I had a difficult time getting into this story, so difficult in fact that I decided not to continue after five hours of listening. The narrator also did nothing for me, no variation in voices. I tried but no luck this time.

The reader

Read this story when it came out, loved it. Now the reader, a lots of times sounds like he has a month full of marbles and accents on the end of a sentence like a 2y old. Took a bit to get past that, but the story was worth it
