Critic reviews

"Raven’s Shadow is an excellent book.... The characters have a real interior life, with thoughts and second thoughts and feelings and the interaction between them is very good." (SF Revu)

"Patricia Briggs is a talented storyteller who enchants her audience with a spellbinding tale. Raven’s Shadow is going on this reviewer’s keeper shelf." (Midwest Book Review)

"Raven’s Shadow is an exciting and touching tale. It’s self-contained enough to give the reader a satisfying sense of completion by the end, while leaving room for a sequel that will be highly anticipated." (RT Book Reviews)

Good classic fantasy

4/5/ 4 stars; A-

I read this book several years ago and enjoyed it so thought I'd buy the audiobook. It was worth it for this classic style fantasy written with Patricia Briggs skill in developing characters. Jennifer James Bradshaw did a good job on the narration.

Always unique

Patricia Briggs is not an author who can be tucked into a generic genre box. There’s something special about her writing. I love that this book focuses on a family - a mother and children figuring out the mystery of the father’s disappearance and traveling to rescue him. So many cool aspects and perspectives.

Complicated but good

I will have to listen to the book again to really understand all the pieces. The story is set in another world, with an Emperor, farmers, Gypsy-type groups, and a version of a Feudal system. A baker’s son goes off to war for a decade. On his way home, he rescues a young woman.
Later, she has to rescue him from a great evil. Help comes from many places, but it takes a while to figure out who is trust-worthy.
A history major would likely enjoy this story, but I got a little lost in the details.
If you are looking for a tie to Mercedes Thompson Hauptman’s world, you will have to look very hard. Mercy is a history major, and then there is magic, shape-shifters, and an intricate plot in both series. And, a major character is an “outsider”, and a strong female, in each series. The writing style is very different. Still good, just different.
I enjoyed it and will listen again.

Good but newer stories much better

I love Patricia Briggs books, so when I came across this I had to give it a try, as always I lover her stories but this one wasn’t as exciting and didn’t capture me as some of her more recent books have. It still is good so give it a whirl.

Excellent book, but what else would I expect.

Patricia Briggs is one of the authors I don't care what she writes, I want to read it. This series did not disappoint. Just listen to it.

Favorite Author, good narration

Nicely narrated, favorite author. I didn't enjoy this one as much as some of the others, but still very well done. I've read and listened to this one and the next one in the series a few times.
