Publisher's summary
Discover eight powerful mindset shifts that enable leaders and those they lead to adapt and thrive in a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty.
Being adaptable and flexible have always been hallmarks of effective leadership, but recent events have seriously stress tested this idea. How do you find calm in the midst of all this chaos?
You need a new mindset, one that treats constant change and uncertainty as a feature, not a bug. Flux helps you develop eight "flux superpowers" that take conventional ideas and turn them on their heads. They'll enable you to see change in new ways, develop new responses, and ultimately reshape your relationship to change. The eight flux superpowers are:
1. Run slower
2. See what's invisible
3. Get lost
4. Start with trust
5. Know your "enough"
6. Create your portfolio career
7. Be all the more human (and serve other humans)
8. Let go of the future
The world is in constant flux, but we can learn to navigate change gracefully and confidently.
Whether you're sizing up your career or reassessing your values, designing a product or building an organization, trying to inspire your colleagues or simply show up more fully in the world, activating your flux superpowers will keep you grounded even when the ground is constantly shifting beneath you.
This book will include a discussion guide.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

The COVID-19 pandemic, increasingly frequent climate disasters, a new war—events we might have called “unimaginable” or “unthinkable” in the past are now reality. Today it feels more challenging than ever to feel unafraid, hopeful, and equipped to face the future with optimism. How do we map out our lives when it seems impossible to predict what the world will be like next week, let alone next year or next decade? What we need now are strategies to help us recover our confidence and creativity in facing uncertain futures.

Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

Story
Few business topics have aroused more skepticism in recent years than the notion of corporate purpose, and for good reason. Too many companies deploy purpose, or a reason for being, as a promotional vehicle to make themselves feel virtuous and to look good to the outside world. Some have only foggy ideas about what purpose is and conflate it with strategy and other concepts like “mission,” “vision,” and “values.” Even well-intentioned leaders don’t understand purpose’s full potential and engage half-heartedly and superficially with it....

Story
Onward tackles the problem of educator stress, and provides a practical framework for taking the burnout out of teaching. Stress is part of the job, but when 70 percent of teachers quit within their first five years because the stress is making them physically and mentally ill, things have gone too far. Unsurprisingly, these effects are highest in difficult-to-fill positions such as math, science, and foreign languages, and in urban areas and secondary classrooms - places where we need our teachers to be especially motivated and engaged.

Story
Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to - and approach for - overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy”.

Artificial intelligence is smarter than humans. It can process information at lightning speed and remain focused on specific tasks without distraction. AI can see into the future, predicting outcomes and even use sensors to see around physical and virtual corners. So why does Intelligence frequently get it so wrong? The answer is us. Humans design the algorithms that define the way that AI works and the processed information reflects an imperfect world.

Highly Recommend, LOVE listening to it, must “listen”!
This book is a Godsend for me in this world full of flux post 2020. April has done an amazing job narrating eight superpowers that build on top of each other, and shed light on a refreshingly human way to approach our relationship with change and to approach our career and life. This book is one of the silver linings in this world full of flux and uncertainly that I hope reaches many people. One of the best surprises is also that the audiobook is narrated in April’s own authentic voice that so soothing to listen to. Highly recommend!

My new go-to gift for the young adults in my life!
“Flux, 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change’” is now my go-to gift for college grads and other young adults in my life. It will help encourage and guide them as they embrace a world of constant change, a skill that many of the adults in their life have yet to master (perhaps these young adults will be able to teach them!).
Though I own the digital and hard-copy formats in order to maximize my access to it, listening to April tell her stories and share her wisdom through the Audible version made it even more powerful. I continue to refer back to this book - I’ve referenced the insightful concepts to many people. I look forward to my own continued growth through completing the exercises she in the book multiple times in the coming months. Thank you, April for sharing so much and giving us hope and guidance as we navigate our way along this journey.

Thoughtful approach to constant change
Change is inevitable in at least one area of of lives. This book prompts us to get in touch with our emotions around the concept of change. The book reminds us that we have options to deal with change. We don’t have to default to change is bad. Change often presents great opportunities even when it was unwelcome.
This book is very digestible. I look forward to using the tools to create my own change as well as re-center when it comes around.
