Publisher's summary

Iconic actress Hayley Mills shares personal memories from her storied childhood, growing up in a famous acting family and becoming a Disney child star, trying to grow up in a world that wanted her to stay forever young.

The daughter of acclaimed British actor Sir John Mills was still a preteen when she began her acting career and was quickly thrust into the spotlight. Under the wing of Walt Disney himself, Hayley Mills was transformed into one of the biggest child starlets of the 1960s through her iconic roles in Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, and many more. She became one of only 12 actors in history to be bestowed with the Academy Juvenile Award, presented at the Oscars by its first recipient, Shirley Temple, and went on to win a number of awards including a Golden Globe, multiple BAFTAs, and a Disney Legacy Award.

Now, in her charming and forthright memoir, she provides a unique window into when Hollywood was still "Tinseltown" and the great Walt Disney was at his zenith, ruling over what was (at least in his own head) still a family business. This behind-the-scenes look at the drama of having a sky-rocketing career as a young teen in an esteemed acting family will offer both her childhood impressions of the wild and glamorous world she was swept into, and the wisdom and broader knowledge that time has given her. Hayley will delve intimately into her relationship with Walt Disney, as well as the emotional challenges of being bound to a wholesome, youthful public image as she grew into her later teen years, and how that impacted her and her choices - including marrying a producer over 30 years her senior when she was 20! With her regrets, her joys, her difficulties, and her triumphs, this is a compelling listen for any fan of classic Disney films and an inside look at a piece of real Hollywood history.

Couldn't Stop Listening

I really enjoyed this book. It really showed how good a book can be when read by the author. I thought the references to her movies were good, - very interesting and not overdone. The ONLY problem that I had with the book was that it finished to soon. It needed a few more chapters to cover the rest of her life up until now. Anyway, a very enjoyable listen!!

For Hayley's fans, this is a gem.

Many of us were quite literally in love with Hayley throughout the 60's and 70's. We wanted to be her best friend, and her our's. Now in our golden years we are gifted with this memoir and with hours of her lovely voice telling us her story.

When I was young I saw many of Haley's movies. Enjoyed all of them.Never realized she was a couple of years younger than me.

A surprising memoir

I have to take a rarely taken opportunity to write a quick review about one of the best autobiographical pieces I have ever read. As a kid, maybe slightly younger than her character in “Pollyanna”, I was enamored of her role in that story. Then, “The Parent Trap”, followed by “in Search of the Castaways “ and “Moonspinner”. She was mesmerizing in all her roles, but her self-deprecating charm in her memoirs, absolutely authentic, made this a wonderful read for me, admittedly already a fan. Thank you, Ms. Mills, for your beautiful story and honesty. And despite the British court’s abuse of your rights, you clearly claim the absolute purpose in life, which is love. God bless you and your family. They’re all lucky to have you in their lives. Sincerely, Dr. Douglas B. Willingham, Salado, Texas

Completely absorbing

I've admired Haley Mills since I was a child and followed every film she made, if I could. It was so gratifying to hear her perspective of her life.

OHMYGOD IT WAS SO GOOOD!😭🥰

It's the longest book I've listened to yet, but I found myself so captivated by her story I hardly noticed. She told it in such a way I wonder, why the heck would she bring that up? -then she'd explain later and it would connect so well! I'm so happy she chose to narrate her story herself! I could hug her for letting me feel close to her in that regard. I have a new appreciation for so many ideas now that she brought up, I won't say to keep from spoiling it. - but I didn't expect to be so self reflecting in response to her self reflection. 😅

Wonderful memoir

This book brought back memories of my love of everything Hayley Mills. I was amazed to learn that the girl next door traveled so many roads in her young life. The story flows well. I just loved listening to her voice and honestly wished it would go on and on and never end.

I was a little worried that I would learn something shocking or something that would ruin my memories of the sweet and vivacious young girl that I had loved in Pollyanna, and then later in Moonspinners or Summer Magic… or the young woman that brought me to tears in The Trouble with Angels when she chose her calling to become a nun. It was so beautiful I found my self considering (although briefly) if I should consider the habit… but what I learned was her journey was pretty relatable. Although I will say the amazing cultures and people she met at a young age are quite extraordinary, but she did struggle with many of the same things mist girls did at her age.

It truly is a beautiful written and narrated book. My only regret in the whole story is that those terrible tax agencies and solicitors took her Disney money. I do not believe for a moment that Walt Disney would have ever allowed that to happen. But not surprising, Hayley Mills handled it with grace and empathy. She is a true treasure.
