About this listen

After years of running, Quinn has finally found a town to settle down in while she searches for the man who tore her life apart. Despite her every intention not to, she's started to put down some roots and make friends. However, the small bit of solace she's found is quickly shattered when a group of vampires walk into the bar where she works and turn her life upside down.

Looking only to stop for a few nights and have a good time, Julian never expected to stumble across someone like Quinn. Determined to keep her free from the vampires looking to use her as a weapon, Julian is stunned to discover himself starting to care for the mysterious woman with a dark past she's unwilling to reveal. It doesn't take him long to realize that the vampires after her are only a part of the problem. This quiet little town is hiding a violent secret of its own; a secret that not only threatens the town, but Quinn in particular.

Loved it!!!

I fell in love with Julian on the first series of kindered. This spin off talks about Julian 2 years later and what awaits him. Definitely recommend and can’t wait to read the next installment ASAP... narrator does a fantastic job and at a great pace. Worth it!

This is a good story

I think this series is a forgotten gem. The plot is unique and entertaining. The narrator is ok. Not the greatest but definitely not horrible. Happy reading!

Not your everyday vampires

This is a great fast paced story. It really took me on a ride and I didn’t know what was going to happen next. The characters were multi level and the author had me hoping for the best for them.
I did listen to this on audio and Meghan Kelly did a wonderful job. She really helped draw me into the story with her different voices.

Exciting

I really enjoyed this. The premise is really interesting. Quinn is sassy and doesn't let anyone walk all over her. She has virtually impenetrable walls up around her. I like Julian, he has a deeper side than I expected.

This is a spin-off series but you don't need to have read the original to follow the story. For a while I did feel I was missing something but by the end I felt I had all the answers I needed.

I always love Meghan Kelly's narration and this was no different. Her voice was perfect for the characters and she distinguishes between them well.

Exciting!

This story was a very powerful tale of vampires, monsters and ordinary people. It had emotions written all over it. Meghan Kelly is a talented narrator and she does the voices so well, I can picture the characters perfectly in my mind. I can’t wait to listen to book 2.

My Two Pennies

Meghan Kelly is incredible when it comes to the narration for this story. The passion and emotions poured into these characters are not only felt though the words but also heard throughout the book and each individual person stands strong with their own voice. I have read reviews that said this is a spinoff from the Kindred Series which I have not read yet but I definitely want to look into now that I’ve been introduced to Quinn and Julian. I was taken on an exciting adventure in this PNR story and was not lost in the slightest starting off with Frost Burn as my first book. This story is filled with non stop action and adventure that has a strong storyline and will keep you on your toes throughout. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series and learn more about all of these characters.

I loved this book and narrator

I wish they had not changed narrators for the 2nd book. I would also like it if Audible would add the 3rd book to this series, " Scorched Ice" , to the collection. The book is available, it has not been added to audible yet though. The good thing is that the 2nd book ended on a good note without a bad cliff hanger.

2.5, round down

2.5, round down (slightly spoilerish)

Honestly, I just didn't like this. I thought Julian was an arrogant a-hole and Quinn a bit of a limp rag. It's not that she was a weak heroine, there just kinda didn't seem to be much to her. I didn't feel their relationship grow and I was often annoyed.

What's more, the book starts with the mystery of Quinn's origins and why vampires are after her. Then, it immediately swerves off into an unrelated and immensely less interesting human investigation. The fact that these two end up being related is merely luck on the part of the characters and felt like nothing more than a manipulation of the plot on the part of the author.

I do want to address the fact that this is the first book in a spin-off series. I have not read the original series, but Frost Burn's synopsis assures me that I don't need to have read it to enjoy Frost Burn. I call BS on that. Yes, I could follow Frost Burn. But the characters and events of The Kindred Series are so often referenced that I 100% felt that I was missing out on vital information. What's more, Julian so often reminded the reader that he'd been a bad man that I believed him. That's part of why I didn't like him. Maybe if I'd read the previous series and seen his moral transformation I would feel different. And there is absolutely no character development of side characters. I assume that is because they are known from the previous series. So, I recommend reading The Kindred before this.

Lastly, I think I have to give in and accept that I don't like Meghan Kelly's narration style. That's not to say it's objectively bad, just not for me. I've listened to several of her books and while they are competently done, I find I just don't like the way she voices people.

All in all, just about nothing worked for me about this book.

Note: I received an Audible code for a copy of this book. I chose to listen and review it.

The narrator is annoying!!!

I feel like I need to keep clearing my throat because of the way this narrator sounds. It is extremely annoying and frustrating.
She also sounds a bit robotic.
I am so glad the narrator is different in the next book.
Not sure how I feel about the story as of yet.
