About this listen

Would you risk everything to protect your family?

Carla Andrews and Lorraine West are work colleagues and best friends. They socialise together, they work in the same bookmakers and they support each other as only best friends can. Then they are murdered together.

When DI Tom Fowler is handed the case, he discovers a journal that Carla has left and must unpick the secrets Lorraine has kept hidden. Soon Carla’s and Lorraine’s husbands become the main suspects. It’s usually the spouse who is responsible, isn’t it?

The investigation progresses until Isaac West, Lorraine’s 16-year-old son, disappears. Will the truth ever emerge? Will Isaac ever be found? And is knowing the truth always worth the sacrifice?

This book was enthralling from the beginning to the end. The plot twists were superb. I’d you are looking for a twist psychological book I highly recommend this one!

Excellent plot and twists

I’ve listened to a lot of books that have decent storylines but are dragged out with a lot of unnecessary fillers. This book wasn’t as long, which kept the story, and my interest, moving. The twists were both unexpected and believable.

Just the right length

Nicely written but I found it less believable and relatable than I had hoped. I felt like certain parts we’re wrapped up a bit too abruptly and neatly which left me feeling dissatisfied. Definitely not a masterpiece but allowed me to be busy while traveling long distance.

Not sure how I feel

The narrator is wonderful but the story is somewhat slow and repetitive- I found myself wanting to fast forward some - it's a decent story that starts out great but ends up being not that interesting.

Just okay but nice narration

Talk about frustrating! Investing hours only to be assaulted on the last pages is just depressing. Hopefully there will be a follow-up

Worst Ending Ever

kept me engaged all the way to the end and right when I thought it was over it hit me with a surprise. A multi-cast with stories that bring it all together at the end. very good.

I love that she led me everywhere but the solution Anita Waller is an amazing author who I have just discovered

I didn’t figure this one out

The twist at the end was superb-in fact, there were surprises throughout the entire story. This is the third book by this author I have listened to and I’ve not been disappointed. I will continue to follow her works. I am, however, growing weary of the social engineering in contemporary literature-not just her works, but many other newer authors as well. I expect to see it here and there as society is permeated with it but it seems to be in almost every single book I’ve read or listened to from the last 15 years or so. In all fairness, I believe it actually added to the story in this book, but that’s not always the case. Many times it adds nothing to the story and seems to be inserted just to make a statement and be edgy. Just my humble opinion.

The twist-I can usually figure out who did it by 1/2 to 2/3 through the story but this caught me completely off guard!
