About this listen

With a reputation for fast moves on the gridiron and even faster moves off the field, Shane Devlin was a player in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, his bad-boy persona has made him a risky prospect as a quarterback, and only the Baltimore Blaze are willing to give him a chance. And he's about to take a hit he never expected.

Working for the Blaze, Carly March knows only too well how jocks think - and what they think with - so she's always made a point of keeping them at arm's length. But when she shares a kiss with the devilishly handsome Shane, she finds it hard to play by her own rules - and even harder to resist him.

Cute story

Not too much angst, but not too easy of a path for the couple either. There was plenty of side stories besides the couples love story to keep it interesting.

Baggage

Both Carly and Shane have baggage from their childhoods. Both of the childhoods that were tragic in different ways. Shane seems to be afraid of a relationship of any kind. Carly has been building family with her sister. There are some tough moments to get Shane to reevaluate his life and priorities. I really liked the audio version. #CMCon25

Romance with Suspense

Shane is a jerk but Carly can't seem to resist him anyway. This is my first book by Tracy Solheim and AFAIK the first book I've listened performed by Charles Constant (but his voice seems very familiar). I enjoyed listening to this and had to force myself to stop listening so I could get some sleep. (I should know better than to start a new book too late in the evening.)

The story held my attention and there was a bit more suspense than I expected from the blurb. I won't give it away but I'll say that Shane came to her rescue more than once. While Shane was an absolute jerk more often than not, he eventually stepped up to the plate.

Charles Constant's voice is nice and deep and very pleasant to listen to and he truly performs this story. While he doesn't do a fantastic job with female voices, I loved the timbre of his voice over all and there are more male characters in this story than female. I plan to listen to the other books in this series.
