About this listen

Best-selling editor Rebecca Rowland (Unburied: A Collection of Queer Dark Fiction) and Dark Ink Books (Savini, Unmasked: The True Life Story of the World’s Most Prolific Cinematic Killer) present a unique anthology of monster, folk, paranormal, and psychological horror as glimpsed through the lens of the latchkey generation.

In this assortment of spine-chilling tales, 22 voices shine a strobe light on the cultural demons that lurked in the background while they came of age in the heyday of satanic panic, slasher flicks, milk carton missing, music television, video rentals, and riot grrrls.

These Gen-X storytellers once stayed out unsupervised until the streetlights came on, and what they brought home with them is nothing less than sinister.

Featuring brand new fiction from Kevin David Anderson, Glynn Owen Barrass, Matthew Barron, C.D. Brown, Matthew Chabin, L.E. Daniels, C.O. Davidson, Douglas Ford, Phil Ford, Holly Rae Garcia, Dale W. Glaser, Tim Jeffreys, Derek Austin Johnson, Eldon Litchfield, Adrian Ludens, Elaine Pascale, Erica Ruppert, Kristi Petersen Schoonover, Rob Smales, Mark Towse, Thomas Vaughn, and Thomas K.S. Wake.

Creepy AF

Cannibalism, serial killers, demons in rock bands, possessed dolls, haunted houses, rats and Kurt Russel. It's got it all. And it's creepy AF.

Centred around Gen X themes and nostalgia, this book contains a bunch of subgenres, ranging from creature-feature to religious to slasher to paranormal and more.

There's something for everyone in here and the authors have produced twenty-two really dark, disturbing and touching stories.

While the narration could be a little flat, by no means is it the worse I've heard; it didn't distract me from the stories and I became used to it pretty quick.

A few of my favourites tales were:

• 𝘈 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 by Thomas Vaughn,

• 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘦 by Kevin David Anderson,

• 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 by Mark Towse,

• 𝘚𝘶𝘣𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 by Matthew Barron,

• 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 by Holly Rae Garcia

But please let me reiterate that all the stories were wonderful and horrifying in their own ways and I enjoyed listening to them all.

Thank you so much to the editor and publisher for this ARC, it's a great anthology!

Great book!

I really enjoyed all the stories. As a Gen X-er myself the stories had some nostalgia mixed in with the horror. Every story was great and some will definitely stick with me for a while. I recommend it for anyone, but especially if you are a part of Gen X also.
