About this listen

A terrified voice cried out in the night. "Who are you? What do you want?"

The sound of snapping twigs closed in on the five teenagers enjoying an evening around a glowing campfire at Gitchie Manitou State Park. The night of music and laughter had taken a dark turn. Evil loomed just beyond the tree line, and before the night was over, one of the Midwest's most horrific mass murders had left its bloodstains spewed across the campsite. One managed to survive and would come to be known as the "Gitchie Girl". Harrowing memories of the terrifying crime sent her spiraling out of control, and she grasped at every avenue to rebuild her life.

Can one man, a rescue dog, and a glimmer of faith salvage a broken soul? This true story will touch your heart and leave you cheering that good can prevail over the depravity of mankind.

Tense, horrific, inspiring. A real horror movie

Such a good book. Told from the POV of Sandra, the sole survivor, and the police detective who believed in her, the book is a tense recollection of what happened that night and the aftermath that followed.

Sandra is such a true survivor, and an inspiration. She had a rough life before the murders and rape, and then dealt with isolation and scrutiny after. Yet, she went on and managed to live the most normal life she could. She's tough!

The book is a little slow at the beginning, talking about Sandra's upbringing, but gets nail biting intense and stays that way. You find yourself wanting to comfort Sandra and stand with her through this ordeal.

Incredible Story

Absolutely incredible what Sondra went through especially considering her young age. It is a testimony to the will of survival!

Gripping and tragic

Any additional comments?

As edge-of-your-seat as true crime gets. Have to admit that I'm totally creeped out. Easy to understand why ghost hunters still visit the site of this epic tragedy today. The lone, very young survivor was unbelieveably brave and stalwart in facing the monstrous perpetrators at trial. This is the stuff that horror movies and nightmares are made of.

I was born and raised in South Dakota and I never heard about this.

I was born and raised in South Dakota and I never heard about this.. People, especially teenage girls, can be so mean. Sandra is a remarkable woman. Great book!!

Decent read - kinda short though

I decided to listen to this book after hearing a Podcast where the author, Phil Hamman, was interviewed. I was a little disappointed in the actual book since I felt it was short for a True Crime novel. However, learning more about Sandra was really great. She is an inspirational person. I wish there would've been more facts related to the crime & trials.

Another very hook

I chose rhis title because it was a true story of a crime in the rural midwest. Surprises kept poping up which kept me glued though I did postpone one to continue another time. No time is spent on the lives of the killrrs....

Sharing with friends!

I live in NW Iowa but have always been afraid to visit Gitchie Manitou. Despite the horrors, reading that Sandra could transcend all she went through and live a life of faithfulness really put me at ease.

Heartbreaking Story

I got this due to a recommendation of a friend. I moved to the city of Sioux Falls over a decade ago and happened to be out with a friend at Gitchie Park. I was showing the photos to a native of Sioux Falls and she asked me about the murders there. I had no idea that there had been any and informed her that I loved the park. The horrors that happened there are in there pages. My heart goes out to the poor girl who survived. She and those boys didn't deserve any of what happened. I am greatful for the read as it shows that beautiful places sometimes hide dark secrets.
