Publisher's summary

In the latest thriller in the number-one New York Times best-selling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive - and a terrifying weapon.

Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body - and killed him.

After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team - and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed - it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close - though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless.

While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman - or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

No growth for Eve

I get that Eve didn't have the best upbringing in the world but either she just doesn't care about her husband and friends or she is incapable of learning how to be a wife or a friend. I don't know why Rourke stays with her. She is blind to anything except her job. I feel sorry for her. I hope the author ends up killing her off instead of getting her pregnant one day because she has no ability to be a parent. And I don't see parenthood magically changing her to a warm person. This story was so-so. Lots of stuff from previous books and not much heart to it. On the plus side, there were no nightmares that go on and on and on. If book 51 isn't a lot better, I am going to have to be one with the one-dimensional Eve Dallas.

Privileged Psychopath

I liked how this case took a little longer to understand all the players. The story takes you down a number of roads that exposed some sick behavior but nothing gets past Eve and Peabody!

Narration

Susan Erickson is fantastic!!! She’s able to bring all the characters and their emotions to life. I’ve listened to her perform the entire series thus far. I’m a big reader, but these books I prefer to listen to her Thanks.cathie

Back to the classics, thank goodness.

The last book was a little too gory for me and I was so glad that this story went back to the usual ups and downs of an Eve Dallas novel. I do wish there was a little more of the Roarke world. Maybe Eve could help him instead of his always following her, but I love the characters and the futuristic story. I'll keep following the series.

Lackluster but still enjoyed

I’m a diehard Dallas fan. I devour these books. This one seemed to just flow through the motions... same beginning, middle, and end. I missed several characters. There was hardly any dialogue with the supporting characters and nothing personal.. I enjoy it best when we are hearing about the personal lives of the characters.. Peabody, McNab, Mavis, Charlie, Nadine, Rio.. when there’s details and updates. We got none of that here. For the 50th book I really did expect more. I hope she’s not sick of writing these because the characters still have so much they can do.. need to do. But I still had fun listening and will read the next.

Susan Erickson is phenomenal. Always top notch narration! She’s by far my favorite narrator. She does hundreds of voices and accents. Idk how she does it but she’s the best!

Ok, but hoped for more

Just okay, following the same path as many before. Wishing she would mix it up somehow. I miss not knowing and Eve questioning her self and being surprised.

Loved it

please keep me up to date on the latest audio book about Eve and Rourke. The series so far has been a guessing game to the end. I also like the love stories. It is not just a crime novel. The biggest problem I have with the series is stopping the audio to sleep.

Another great book in the series

JD Robb (Nora Roberts) gives us another great Eve Dallas book. I don’t k ow how she continues to make the characters and the stories better each time. Love this series.
