William Desjardin was dead: the victim of an interrupted home burglary, according to the police. Cassidy returns to Embarrass with Julia to support her with the funeral details, rehoming Julia's mother, and settling the Desjardin estate. For Cassidy, being back in the small, northern Minnesotan town has brought back a number of good memories—most starring Julia herself. But it's also triggered some memories she'd rather leave buried. And when an unexpected life insurance policy implicates Julia in her father's death, the short visit turns into much more than a trip down memory lane.

I was very disillusioned and no longer join these kind of groups.
So here we go!
Have you ever read a few books in a series and think “The first book was the best?” Well in this series, “Don’t Call Me Hero” every subsequent book is the best. I’ve become very invested in the main characters Julia, and Cassidy. Their dynamic takes them to a very awkward first meeting, and a surprise meeting in a different town.
Cassidy Miller is a marine veteran with two tours in Afghanistan. On her second tour, her team is hit with an IED. Cassidy and her friend Pensacola (love this name) are the only two who make it out alive, though with devastating injuries.
Trying to get herself, and Pensacola to safety, Cassidy is forced into making and executing some horrific decisions.
Julia Desjardin is a public defender. She is a product of a super wealthy family with “old” money, and a disgraced father, who was once mayor of Embarrass, Minnesota.
Julia, is uptight, friendless and grieving the loss of her brother, who committed suicide, after his own tour in Afghanistan, and her mother who is suffering from dementia.
Yes, a lot of this is dark, but the web that Julia and Cassidy weave around themselves and the characters that they choose to allow into their tight circle, is warm and inviting.
The trajectory of their experiences lead them into danger, and also helps them in understanding the how and why of the attraction and love they have for each other.
Lori Prince does an excellent job of narrating the different characters. It’s very easy to discern who is speaking.
If you’re ready for a deep read, with characters that you can actually follow, and become invested in, try this series.

I have been to MN and many other states and this is so done wrong.
I love Eliza's books but I cant listen to this anymore.
Who even talks like this? I'm sure Ms. Prince does well in her work and she is very acclaimed,
But in my opinion this falls short. Every time Cassidy speaks,
I still am having trouble
