About this listen

After her philandering husband's boat went down, newly single Mia Carina went back to Astoria, the bustling Queens neighborhood of her youth. Living with her nonna and her oversized cat, Doorstop, she's got a whole new life - including some amateur sleuthing...

Mia is starting work at Belle View, her father's catering hall, a popular spot for weddings, office parties, and more - despite the planes that occasionally roar overhead on their way to LaGuardia and rattle the crystal chandelier. Soon she's planning a bachelor party for a less-than-gentlemanly groom. But it goes awry when the gigantic cake is wheeled in and a deadly surprise is revealed...

Since some of her family's associates are on the shady side, the NYPD wastes no time in casting suspicion on Mia's father. Now, Mia's going to have to use all her street smarts to keep him out of Rikers Island...

Funny and Warm-hearted

Author Maria DiRico's first book in her Catering Hall mystery series is set in Queens, NY and includes a slew of memorable characters. The City, not just Manhattan, plays a role in the lively plot as Mia Carina, a mobsters daughter, returns to her hometown to help her dad run his new, straight business. Cozy mysteries do not let the murders detract from the fun, and the author is adept at keeping it light.
Read with NY style by Devon Sorvari.

WHAT A GREAT NEW SERIES

WHERE DO I BEGIN? A FATHER WHO IS MOBBED UP, A BROTHER IN A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, A MOB BOSS AS A REAL GODFATHER. NONE OF THIS SOUNDS COZY, BUT IT IS. IT WORKS. THE CHARACTERS ARE UNIQUE AND STEREOTYPICAL, AT THE SAME TIME, AND THAT IS A GOOD THING. I LOVE THEM ALL, EVEN DONNY, SR., AND I DON'T THINK I SHOULD LOVE DONNY, BUT I DO. THE NARRATOR DID A WONDERFUL JOB. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK.

Here comes the body review

Story had many characters to follow. Each was developed & identified so they could be followed throughout the story.
Narrator was pretty good at multi-voice and accents.
Surprise ending!
Worth the time to read.

Loved it!

This was a really good book and narration. it doesn't follow the "same old, same old" of most cozy mysteries, but isn't overly violent.

The characters are fun people you grow to care about and the mystery keeps you guessing. There's a lot to look forward to, so I hope the series is a long one.

The actress who narrates is also excellent. No ridiculous voices, manages both genders well, and great with accents.

All good!

Great story… performance-meh

The story is interesting and Funny!
However, the narrator has no comedic timing or inflection. I found myself repeating lines and phrases in my head with more appropriate inflection, just to satisfy my need for humor.
