It’s ok. I don’t get why it is being rated so low but it’s not for me. It definitely didn’t convince me that the suspect was the Zodiac. I love Patrick though!

If this were shortened… immensely…it would be an interesting hypothesis and good entertainment but after redundant repeat over and over again and an obvious self serving bias to make Doeer fit as a square in a round hole I lost the ability to stay interested and open.

Like others have said, I really wanted to like this book but I just can't. The theory is good and I think the author is on to something but it is HORRIBLY narrated. It was so hard to stay engaged with the story because it felt like a boring college lecture. This is how the kids at Hogwarts must have felt in Professors Binns' History of Magic class.

Purchased based on podcast recommendation. I believe the author has uncovered information that should be pursued by law enforcement and may potentially close the case. That said, I absolutely hated the way this is written. The refusal to use pronouns and constantly referring to himself in the third person was grating. I gave up listening during chapter 4 and instead read a magazine article highlighting the book’s most compelling evidence.

This book is basically a chronicle of the pre-internet “internet” activities of a mediocre white man, and it’s about as interesting as that sounds, which is to say, it isn’t. I generally don’t leave reviews on books unless I’ve read the entire thing, but I just couldn’t do it with this one. I made it to chapter 7 so I think I made a good effort. I was constantly thrown off by the author’s use of the third person, which was employed throughout for no discernible reason except for the listener to hear his name as many times as possible. It *is* a PR tactic, so maybe that’s what he was going for? Kobek, just say “I found,” “I thought,” etc. It would have made the book more personal at least and less like the writer is another character in the story to keep track of. Kobek, I’m sorry I didn’t like you book, I know you put a lot of time and effort into the research, and frankly I’m amazed that ANY of this kept your attention long enough to write about it.

As a true crime/history fan I have always been fascinated by this case & was excited to see this audiobook promoted by a favorite podcast of mine. The narrator does a great job with reading, but the text/the book itself is soooo drawn out for no reason. I can barely concentrate on listening to some parts, and they don’t even seem to have anything to do with the case. There’s a whole chapter about some random guy and I couldn’t even begin to tell you what it had to do with Zodiac or the new suspect the book is mainly about. There are also so many dates, times, and addresses just read out that it made it hard to follow. Also, the author seems like kind of a dick with some of his eccentric opinions and the way he expresses them. I so wish this book had more about the evidence and connections to the case! Disappointing read.

It's not bad, but not spectacular. I enjoyed the unique investigative techniques in the search for Zodiac, but I felt there were some significant leaps in logic in order to maintain the leading theory and thesis of the piece. I felt there could have been some more logical or mundane explanations for some of the pieces of evidence Kobek brings to light. Overall, though, the book is interesting and the techniques and its points are compelling.

Weird third person self-referencing and bazaar editorializing. The book is lacking any real investigation and just a man going down a deep, dark, myopic, pointless rabbit hole. I gave it a try because a podcast suggested it, I am now realizing it must have been an ad. Sigh…

As a true crime podcast follower since it’s inception, I’ve heard it all and many stories lack intellectual integrity, undying curiosity and a commitment to pull on all the strings. Many choose to speak to, or dumb down to, the lowest common denominator for greater ratings. This book has a higher calling! This author demonstrates raw honesty, transparency and trust that his listeners will want to dig deep with him and learn something. I find that so refreshing and now I can appreciate the difference! The author expects the listener to be interested in the minutiae of the research, the context of the times and the incredible work it takes (and blunders he makes) as he aggressively investigates a subject. I was hooked when hearing about the painstaking process of following a lead and questioning himself for biases all through the writing process. And unlike so much cold case reporting flooding our brains, we get to enjoy the satisfaction of the author, although begrudgingly, probably solving the case. Bravo!
