About this listen

I knew I wanted her the first time I saw her. Only problem? She can’t be my mate.

I’m a son of a traitor and former Alpha, and I know it’s the legacy people see.

But I must be the Alpha of my Pack and protect them from the new threat to our world: Vampires.Valac and the others are still in the shadows, and we must find their lairs before we lose more than we already have.

Only every time the enemy attacks, Skye puts herself in jeopardy. I’m the dominant wolf, but she’s the one with the most to lose.

She’s the Pack princess. The daughter of legends.

And I know she’s not my mate.

But I want her. I need her. And now I must convince my wolf. Or break the most sacred rules of the moon goddess.

Again.

Skye and Chase

I hate to admit it but I have never read any of the Redwoods or Talons series so I am starting my journey with The Aspen Pack but as these packs are now interconnected I am learning more of their history all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Aspen Pack series and had no problem picking up the story and understanding what had gone before. Since then I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this second book, and let me tell you it was worth the wait. That said I would recommend reading or listening to this series in order.

The story is beautifully written and the author's wonderfully descriptive writing had me hooked on this action-packed, fast-paced shifter romance. It’s an emotional rollercoaster ride that quite frankly I didn't want to get off as I learned all about Chase the Alpha and Skye the woman/wolf he is drawn to.

Chase Leyne is the Alpha of the Aspen Pack, a pack which was devastated by his father who was the Alpha before him. A wicked, evil Alpha who tortured and murdered many of his pack and used dark magic to increase his power, he even imprisoned Chase and tortured him for years while the pack thought he was dead. Then when his father was finally defeated Chase became Alpha, but he doesn't believe himself worthy or that he has the love or loyalty of all his pack. He worries that when they see him they remember his father and so drives himself to be the Alpha they need, determined to protect his pack even if it costs him his life.

He is a protector who resents being protected especially by Skye Jameson-Anderson, she's a member of the Redwood pack, but because of an alliance between the packs is often on Aspen land, training and enhancing her fighting skills. Skye has always felt broken, she knows she's loved but she doesn’t know where she fits in her pack. She doubt's her abilities, yet she's strong. She has no problem looking a higher-ranking wolf in the eye something a lesser-ranking wolf shouldn't be able to do.

Chase is drawn to her but because of a prophecy believes she isn't his mate, he knows she's drawn to him too and hates it when she gets hurt trying to protect him! They may not be mates but the attraction between them is strong and they decide to have a friends-with-benefits relationship but knowing it can't be permanent. Then things get complicated as their emotions come into play, while Chase is sure she's not his mate he believes she is more than an ordinary wolf and is destined to be the mate of Alpha just not his.

It's a story about fated mates, vampires, dark magic, and an evil force lurking in the shadows. It's also a story of loyalty and love, heartbreak and sadness that brought tears to my eyes - in short, this story has everything. The characters some of whom will be familiar to you if you've read the first book or the Redwoods or Talons series are so well described, that they feel real.

The chemistry between Skye and Chase is palpable, but their story was just a part of a much bigger story all woven together beautifully, I'm hooked and need to know what is going to happen next. It’s a great addition to this series and I cannot wait for the next book, this is a pack like no other and I want to go back and visit again!

The narration of the book by Aiden Snow and Kit Swann was excellent, each brought life to the characters and delivered a faultless performance.

Book 2 Chase and Skye Amazing!

This is book two and it definitely doesn’t disappoint! The author has a way of drawing us into these worlds she creates and we can’t get enough.

Chase and Skye are utter perfection together they both deny wanting each other because of their position in their packs until their desires for one another finally bubble over and they can no longer deny the chemistry.

Always a one click author for me. She never disappoints to deliver a page turner that gives us a HEA.

The narrators were the perfect choice.

Amazing Read

I absolutely loved reading Chase and Skye's story. The way it just grabbed me from page 1 and never let go. Carrie Ann Ryan has done it again with this one. I loved the plot and story line and characters and cant wait to read this again and again.

I love how the narrators did with this story. Aiden Snow and Kitt Swan did such an amazing job with the narration that I could listen to the story over and over again and Carrie Ann keeps her readers engaged from start to finish.

The Aspen Pack continues...

While this book can be read as a standalone, it helps newbies like me to the fantasy/paranormal world to start from book 1. I think I'm starting to get the premise, but my knowledge of shifters, alphas, and all that is still at the mediocre level. What I did get is that Chase is the alpha of the Aspen Pack. Skye is part of the Redwood Pack. Chase and Skye aren't mated, but they have chemistry. Chase labels Skye as Gamma, but Skye doesn't agree. If I understood correctly, their packs are working together to get rid of the riff raff vampires who are wreaking havoc in the realm. Regardless, Chase and Skye get their HEA, but not before they have to defend their packs. While this type of book is not my usual cup of tea, the narrators Lee Samuels and Summer Morton, kept me hooked into the story. They did an amazing job of bringing the characters and story to life.

I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this review.

Action packed

The second book of the Aspen Pack series and it doesn't disappoint. Chase, alpha of the Aspen pack, is determined to keep his pack safe from the vampires that continue to rein terror down on them. He wants to prove to his pack that he is nothing like his father and he will do everything to protect them.

Skye, princess of the Redwood pack, doesn't know where she fits in within her pack. Always going where is needed, she constantly puts herself in harms way to protect Chase. Spending so much time together, Skye and Chase give into their attraction towards one another, knowing they will never be mates...or will they?

Actioned packed! Great narration by Aiden Snow and Kit Swann.

Enjoy the ride

I really enjoyed Chase and Skye's story, however, I now have even more questions. Ms Ryan knows how to draw out the suspense on who the bad guy is and why. She did this in the Redwoods and she's doing it again here. I still wonder is the bad guys are related somehow, but one was a demon and the other is a vampire so doubtful.

All I can say is read the book, read the series and enjoy the ride with the rest of us. I can't wait for the next book.

Aiden Snow and Kit Swann do such a great job with the shifters. It's like they were born to narrate them.

Case and Skye

Haunted in Darkness is the second book of the Aspen Pack series. This book is about Alpha Chase Leyne and Skye Anderson. The Aspen pack is still trying to build itself up from the last alpha who had murdered most of the pack as well as fight off the new threat that has targeted them and all other wolves. Chase is trying his best to be what his pack needs but has many insecurities as it was his father who had done the damage they are trying to build from. Patricia “Skye” Anderson is the Jameson pack princess but not ranking and feels like her wolf is broken because it doesn’t act like how it is supposed to. They are both attracted to each other but know that they are not mates and can only have fun together until they find their mates.
This book has great relationships between packs, friends, and family. It has suspense, and plenty of action. The only thing that I didn’t really like was that it felt over done being reminded constantly that they were not mates.
I did listen to the Audible for this book and the voice actors did an amazing job bringing this world to life.
It can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the first book to understand more of the vampire aspect of what’s going on.

Fated mates are not as easy to find anymore

When you dive into the paranormal world of shifters you are often met with the concept of fated mates. But when the world has been broken and shifted under these packs, the mating bonds may have changed again. This story of Chase and Skye as they work together to fight this new threat to their packs and work to bridge the gaps and build up their broken worlds they are also fighting some feelings too.
I loved how Carrie Ann Ryan bridges the gap of the shifter world with the need for touch and the human world with uncertainty of love, without the surety of a fated mate pull.
Getting to watch Chase as he stands his ground and finds his footing as an Alpha after so much has happened was something special on its own.
It is really no surprise to me that these two amazing narrators (Aiden Snow and Kit Swann) have brought this story to life in such a fantatic way. Their ability to bring these characters to life with full emotion was a wonderous experience.
