About this listen

Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only female Prime Minister, was a complex and formidable leader whose impact on Indian politics and society remains deeply influential.

Born into the Nehru family, she was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, and was steeped in the ideals of independence and public service from a young age. Her political journey saw her rise from her father’s advisor to a powerful figure in her own right, leading the nation through pivotal events like the Green Revolution, which bolstered India’s agricultural self-sufficiency, and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

Known for her decisive and sometimes controversial policies, she declared a state of Emergency in 1975, curtailing civil liberties to preserve her hold on power, a period that still sparks debate. Her dedication to a strong, self-reliant India drove her to implement major social and economic reforms, but also earned her critics who saw her as authoritarian.

Assassinated in 1984, her life and legacy remain subjects of admiration and criticism. Indira Gandhi’s leadership left an indelible mark on India’s path, solidifying her as both a symbol of resilience and a cautionary figure in the history of democratic governance.
