Story
In 1992, the deadliest year in Chicago’s history, seven-year-old Dantrell Davis was shot and killed in front of his elementary school inside the public housing complex Cabrini-Green. What happened to Dantrell led to a truce among Chicago’s gangs, but it also ignited a national panic about poverty and violence in America’s cities. Dantrell’s name would soon be used to demolish all of Chicago’s high-rise public housing, displacing tens of thousands of low-income families.

The chilling scene recalled for press and police alike Jack the Ripper’s victims in London. Panicked New Yorkers worked feverishly to halt that maniac’s spree from expanding across the Atlantic. The city only sighed relief after detectives abruptly arrested a traveling Algerian ex-soldier for the crime.

Picked this true crime listen from the Audible Original list. Fairly short listen, a little over 5 hours. I was immediately sucked into the story. It’s a very difficult listen due to the brutality of the kidnappings. Definitely held my attention.

A Heatbreaking Investigation into Kidnappings
This was an excellent account of a series of kidnappings in Mexico and the convoluted history of the man arrested for them. Terrified residents of this well to do area never knew who would be next. Gives some recent Chile, where the suspect grew up along with questions and concerns. The saddest takeaway is that the handling of the cases by local authorities was less than it could’ve been and national attention came when several Americans were kidnapped and some killed. More attention came to the American case, than Mexican citizens in their own country.

Karla Souza is 🔥
One of the things I hate about books on an international subject is that the performers are rarely familiar with that language. It happens a lot when dealing with subject matters in Spanish. Karla Souza is Mexican, so it makes all the sense in the world that she performs a book about a Mexican town. Her pronunciation in Spanish is that of a native speaker, and I think that enhances the execution of this audiobook/series. It should always be done—it’s utterly frustrating to have actors mispronouncing crucial information (such as names, places, and local terms). Souza is an excellent actress and her reading was precise; it had the perfect cadence and it seemed respectful to its subject matter.

Misstitled
90% of the book covered the history of the Pinochet regime and the lives of the perpetrators and not the kidnappings, investigation, and trial. A more accurate title would have been The Life and Times of Ramon Guerra.
