Excerpt
A DAY IN DA CODEZ
Debo
I woke up on a Saturday morning, determined to shake the spot before my parents woke up and started tripping. They had it bad, questioning my reason for leaving the house so early and my choice of clothes. I was G’d up: cleaners pressed, tan khaki suit with red letters on the back that read ‘Piru Gang,’ and a white T-shirt underneath. I debated whether I should wear my black house shoes or red Nike Cortez’. I went with my Nike’s, just in case I had to run. To complement my gear, I put on my Cuban chains, P hat, and Guess watch with the red leather band. I grabbed my pager off my dresser and checked myself out in the mirror. My cornrows were straight, still looking freshly done. Pleased with my appearance, I got my strap out of a shoebox hidden in the back of my closet and headed out the door.
When I stepped onto the porch, I was greeted by the California summer breeze. It wasn’t even noon yet, and it already felt like the temperature was about 75 degrees. ‘Another hot day in Compton,’ I thought. I wasn’t complaining though. I loved the summer and all that it brought: hood picnics, block parties, house parties, car shows, and hoochies in daisy dukes. Overall, a good-ass time. Because of all the outdoor activity, niggas were likely to get caught slipping, which was why the summer was considered homicide season. No matter how many patrol cars the police force put on the street, each year the murder rate increased. It didn’t bother me as long as my hood was doing the murders and not the ones being murdered!
