Good Prequals

Always fun to hear about the characters before all hell breaks loose. Wish they were longer!

A great set of short stories, but...

... I will give the advice that I didn’t actually take. Read Promise of Blood first. The stories in this book give a good bit of prequel insight, but leave you with a lot of why type questions if you’re as nerdy with your bookishness like I am.

Why are these mages this way? Why do they react so? Etc.

Then the who type questions appear. Who is Ka Poel? And that is why I recommend that you read the first book before going down this well written rabbit hole.

A great add on to the universe, but shouldn’t be the first book you read within it.

Drop the narrator.

Julie is bad. Doesn’t do her homework. She is a huge letdown compared to Christian.

Good short stories, good narrator

The stories are great and at first I didn't like the lady narrating the short stories but she's all right, there is a haughty tone to her voice that I think rubs people the wrong way.

Disappointment

Why, why in the world is Julie narrating this? Huge let down after finishing powder mage trilogy.

Decent stories again ruined by a terrible narrator

The only slightly redeeming part of this set of stories compared to the Powder Mage Novella Collection is that most of the main characters are female in this one, and Hoverson is worst when doing male voices, especially Tamas. I actually was happy to spend extra money to get Return to Honor narrated by Christian Rodska. I really hope in the future they stick to Rodska or pick a distant female narrator. There are plenty of great ones out there.

Great stories, meh narration

The stories themselves were great! the narration was not as good. It seemed like the narrator struggled with how she wanted to sound. Her pronunciation was odd. It was also really jarring to hear Tamas pronounced like Tomas and Hrusch to be Rush.

I think I'd enjoy the narrator with other books where she knows how she wants to read the story and how she wants to sound. Her pronunciation and accent was a bit all over the place and made me think of Moira Rose a bit.
