Great Story, tough narrator

The story of Gracia Burnham is amazing and incredibly moving. The only part of the book that I disliked was the narration. When quoting others, the narrator put on these silly and sing song voices which cheapened the raw emotion and moving accounts of Gracia’s experience. At times I felt like I was listening to a kids radio program…the voices were that silly. It is just my opinion, but I prefer someone to read without trying to “act”. Let the words speak for themselves.

Emotional true perseverance in horrendous situation

I could not stop listening to this emotionally triggering true saga of tremendous courage and reliance on what God would do and if he would show up. Many questions most believers ask are triggered as this story is told.

Forgiveness in Action

What happens when bad things happen to good people? When those people fall into the hands of evil people for a season? When not all come out alive? But when they cling to God during these times and continue to work for the salvation of their captors? This is a modern day story that reminds me of captives in the Bible who honored God in adversity and are our Bible heroes. Bad times happen to God’s people. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. I pray God works in my life and yours that His kingdom is increased every day. This book is a great read! Very inspiring and interesting story.

Inspirational outcome

I was oblivious to this story back in 2001, eventhough my parents were missionaries and Malaybalay is my birthplace! I am so inspired by the raw emotions and honest experiences shared! Too often Christians do not openly admit to their doubts and struggles, in their walk with God, so this was refreshing and encouraging! I found the ending was the best part, to see how God used this crisis to share the gospel.

The greatness of our Holy God and Father

I am very glad to have read this book. I only recently became involved in a ministry on Palawan and have friends who were missionaries there for twenty five years During and beyond the years that the Burnhams were in the Philippines. I had heard of the Burnhams, but like many had likely only heard dramatic versions of what had happened. I am blessed beyond measure to know the truth and to be able to rejoice with Gracie and her family and friends who lived the unfathomable struggle and now rejoice to see what God is doing to bring Himself glory in the aftermath. Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen! Thank you to Gracia for writing this book. I am committing myself to read her second book. How exceedingly glorious!

Inspirational

Would you listen to In the Presence of My Enemies again? Why?

Yes, to better aquaint myself with the captives and to be inspired by their strength and courage to keep going.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gracia, she reminded me of myself. One minute she's strong & standing up to the captors and the next she's crying wishing it was all over with. You can be strong only so long then you hit your breaking point & emotions just boil over. But I think she handled herself very well.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

This is my 1st audio book, but it seemed to, yes.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Follow these missionaries through hell and back.
