Abducted. Forced to fight against her will. Darcy has a 10,000-year-old secret buried in her genetic code. The Druid Gene makes her a target, but it may also save her.

As a second year medical student, Darcy's life revolves around classes, studying, and her boyfriend Adam - until she treks through the desert, touches some mysterious stacked stones, and a network of glowing blue lines radiates under her skin.

Then she saw the spaceship. And it was coming for her.

She faces impossibly bad choices and a missing boyfriend.

Darcy struggles to accept her heritage and master her newfound powers as she navigates deception, betrayal, and mortal danger in order to prevail in the galaxy's most dangerous game-and survive to save Adam.

introducing all new characters

Almost nothing worse (reading-wise) than picking up the next book in a series to find that it introduces a whole new set of characters and abandons the story from the prior books. This one does that. However, it's still pretty good. Slow moving. Mostly setting, back-story and character development. Nearly all of the action comes nearer the end of the book.

I'm writing this after having listened to the fourth volume. You might be thinking the two story lines converge in volume 3. Nope. In volume 4, yes, but in one of the most trivial ways possible. One could skip this book and go right to 4 and not be lost, though it might be a tiny bit jarring when the characters from book 3 appear.

I'm hoping this is not another series where the author keeps adding characters and settings in order to set up for a lifetime of writing books in the universe. This installment certainly has me suspecting that.

Climb on board the Vermachten

Jennifer Foehner Wells never does what you expect... and this book proves just that. But this is an interesting addition to the Confluence Universe. The Druid Gene introduces a whole new set of players... I think that in the first 2 books I was so fixated on the kuboderan, that I wasn't paying all that much attention to the broad diversity of sentient life the series offered... Well the Druid Gene brings this concept to the fore... As Darcy along with her boyfriend are abducted by The Vermachten a slave ship. The ship is seemingly at full capacity, alien species of all kinds and colors. Slaves in confinement waiting until they are sold. And Darcy well she is special in ways that she had no idea of... Darcy has to learn fast if she is going to survive. And as she learns she makes allies.
So climb on board and discover a realm of new possibilities, as Jennifer weaves her storylines together... the Confluence is going to need all the allies it can find to stop the Swarm...

Addendum... I just listened to Robin Miles audio version of this book and I gotta say that it is brilliant... She gave voice not just to Darcy but to several other creatures introduced in this story and I was captivated... I think Jennifer Foehner Wells made a enlightened decision by getting a different narrator for this new story thread in her series...

Love 'A Dangerous Game' theme?

Those who read or watched A Dangerous Game would recognize this story almost immediately. I'm personally torn on how I feel about it. I often struggled with the aspect of a noob besting a season vet, but I finished the story and am ready for the next one in the series.

Fascinating

This author has the uncanny ability to weave complicated sci-fi narratives that make you feel like you are actually there "in the story", that you are living it, no matter how fantastic the narrative is.

Not the same as book 1 and 2 but

I like the universe that the story is told in but I do not totally like the way it's being told. This book really has a racist Viewpoint of the character that is not needed to tell the story. the story is good enough to get past this but only barely. I'll have to think hard about whether or not I go to book for.

A slow burn but totally worth it.

Really love this series. Especially the strong female leads. But also, it’s a nice change from science lead sci-fi. There is more emotion and more character development in these books than the usually sci-fi. Going to be devo when the series ends.

Fantastic!

First impressions after finishing this book.....Give me more of Darcy and this universe! (You're in luck dear reader! See below )

I found The Druid Gene after reading Jennifer's other works; Fluency and Remance (look them up, they are fantastic too!), and wasn't quite sure what I would make of this book. I was so enthralled with her previous work, and wanted more of those characters, that I was concerned this would leave me wanting. Boy was I wrong! Jennifer Foehner Wells , delivers an engaging and captivating story, set in a universe familiar to those who have read the books noted above. The main character, Darcy, is a strong if sometimes naive lead, but throughout the story she comes into her own, and her story, along with the supporting characters draw you in and make this book a page turner (it's an audible book. but you know what I mean !)

I truly hope there are more books on the horizon for both Darcy and her band of misfits, and the others from her previous work. I can see a cross over event at some point which would be absolute craziness! I hope Jennifer Foehner Wells has the writing bug in her cause we certainly need more of this !

Excellent!

Loved it! Yes, the story is not obviously related to the first two books in the series at first. However, it does take place in the same universe and like the first books in the series is very well written. I recommend reading "The Grove" before this book. It will help you understand things a little better.

Thrilling

Absolutely thrilling story. I can't wait for more from this series. It's a well constructed fantasy world with political, economical, ethical, and romantic dilemmas everywhere.

Great book

Loved the book. Engaging all the way to the end. The reading was also great. Lots of depth and detail in the performance.

More sci-fi with female leads please.
