Publisher's summary

There is a secret, hidden within a body, burning within the flames, which will change it all. A man’s charred corpse is found in the latest of a string of arson attacks in the French city of Orléans. His is the first death. An extremist group claim responsibility but their whereabouts cannot be found. Police inspector Capitaine Inès Picaut and her team must track them down before more people die. Their only clue? The name of a woman who has been dead for over five hundred years: Joan of Arc. She is one of the great enigmas of history – a young woman who came from nowhere to lead the armies of France to victory against England. And who died the same fiery death as the man whose body has just been discovered. As more fires rage in Orléans and the death toll mounts, Picaut must look to the past and the secrets which lie buried there to unravel the mysteries of the present. As the clock counts down, she must challenge some fundamental truths to save those closest to her . . . Into the Fire is a breathtaking collision of past and present, a brilliant race-against-time thriller combined with an immaculately woven historical narrative. In it, bestselling author Manda Scott demonstrates why she is one of the most exciting, innovative and highly accomplished storytellers of our age.

Is that language really necessary?

This was an engaging story with interesting albeit wildly outrageous historical revisionism mixed in. What blew my mind was the complete inability of the author to express excitement, frustration, anger, enthusiasm, or any other emotion without F-bombs and every other profanity and explicative she could come up with. I know that some people talk that way, but I also know that most don't. I also know that it is totally unnecessary for the purpose of effective and intelligent communication.

Throw in the violence and adultery and you have a solid Rated R book. Be sure not to listen within hearing of children or anyone else with sensitivities. I share my library with my family and I'll be deleting this book because of the offensive language.

Audible: Still waiting for a rating system so that I and others with standards can avoid the inappropriate books.

Page turner

Interesting back-and-forth between the present and the future. Both excellent stories. Narration was superb.

Wow.

Amazing book and performance. Listened to it at one sitting. Re-kindled my interest in Jeanne D’Arc as well

Chapter 17 or so and so bored

I'm not finished but yikes. It bounces back and forth between current times and the 1400s. It could have been interesting but not so far.

The 1400s are over-acted, angry, violent and creepy.
Current? Honestly, can't say because it's so forgettable.
Actually, the guy reading the 1400s turns my stomach. Not going to torture myself anymore.
