From the author of Planet of the Dead and War for the Planet of the Dead....
Houston, Texas, 1985: While investigating the affluent and seedy Gasper family, Rachel Hawkins, a junior reporter with the Galveston Daily News, stumbles upon a story that will make her career.
Billy Gasper, son to the billionaire tycoon Gasper family, is missing. His yacht found near the Port of Galveston, abandoned all but for a seemingly deranged captain. Where are the crew? And where is Billy?
Meanwhile, while searching for his missing sister who was last seen with her boyfriend Billy Gasper, RadioShack manager Mark joins an ex-military security team hired by Mr. Gasper to find his son. Hidden away, Hawkins joins Mark and the hired goons as they race across the Gulf of Mexico to a private tropical island resort.
All attempts at radio communicate with the island have failed. Its as if the entire resort with hundreds of vacationers and staff have disappeared.
What is really going on? And what will the rescue team find when they get there?

Her older sister, the queen, views Piper's tears during their parents' funeral as a weakness, not to mention her strange affinity for singing. When Piper receives an anonymous note stating her mother is still alive and living in the enemy kingdom of Mondaria, Piper chooses to risk death and flees Capalon to prove, once and for all, that she's not just the queen's defective little sister.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

The overall plot is fairly familiar, people go missing, elite squad is hired to look into it, zombies attack, lots of people die. The part that made this unique was that it was set back in the 80’s. 80’s horror is a warm blanket on a cold night for me. There are a lot of nuggets you have to carefully listen for that set the stage for this taking place in 1985. Properly establishing a world from a different time can be difficult to pull off properly in such a short book. Many of the aspects needed to clearly depict a world that is 35 years ago would clutter a novella. I would have loved to get more of a feeling of being back in 1985, however, given the genre and how short it was I fully applaud Flowers’ effort. I have yet to be disappointed by a story from Flowers and this one is no different.
The characters are a lot of fun and while they are an unlikely group of people to complete the task, they fit the typical gang of people to try. I would say you get some of the feel of the timeline by how the characters are portrayed. I liked how Hawkins was a gung-ho journalist just trying to make her way in a male dominated field. Hawkins and Mark are the most developed of the characters and their role is what really drives the overall story. I really think their story could have been expanded upon and would have been happy to listen to a story two or three times as long.
Matt Weight did a good job narrating. I enjoyed his voice and the energy he put into the characters. The different character voices were paired perfectly for how I pictured each one. The way he pronounced exhaled was probably just a different regional dialect than I am used to, but it threw me off each time I heard it and for some reason everyone was exhaling. Nothing too bad but for me it was the tiny scratch on a polished Ferrari.
The cover is fantastic. It perfectly sets the tone for the story.

Typical zombie tale!
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
The story here is very fast paced and fits a lot of action into a small package. The characters of Mark and Hawkins are likable while the mercenaries are all gruff and disposable. It nailed the 80s very well. Pretty graphic but it is about flesh eaters. Still okay for my 6 year old to enjoy it with me. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a short trip down nostalgia lane.
The narration was done pretty well. My only negative was that he pronounces Exhale like Exzale. This also accentuates how often the word is used in the story.
I received a free promotional copy of this audiobook and I am leaving a fare and honest review.
Fun and quick zombie romp!!!

This was a short but enjoyable zombie apocalypse story. Very much had that Romero feel to it, which was great. There is nothing original here, but it is at least well executed. The narration is good. All in all, a great listen if you want something to kill a couple hours with.

Though the book isn't completely overwhelmed by action, there's a bit of it, and some of it definitely isn't for the squeamish.
Wasn't a fan of the narration. Hard to explain, but it felt like many parts of sentences were read in exile instead of together, which means they didn't have the proper intonations. Weight also sounded like he was just coming down from a cold. It all served to be a bit distracting.
The characters aren't terribly deep, and the narration certainly didn't help there either. While they weren't porno-generic, they were still basically props for the story and that's about it.
I was provided this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review. Overall, if you're a fan of classic zombie horror, you'll be entertained. Just don't expect any "answers" -- this is just about the action.

I love zombies, anything zombie-related. So, when I saw this book advertised on Audiobook Boom, I was all eager to learn more. On that note, this was an interesting listen-to (audiobook version). I wish it would have been a little longer though, at least giving the reader a clue as to how the zombie outbreak started. Given the island had drugs going back and forth to it, or so I’d assume, I’m guessing it started with the drugs? I have no clue though. I’d also be curious to know why the author decided to have his story take place in the ‘80s.
The narrator did an alright job. He wasn’t able to do a female voice that good, but… His accent for Jesus—the Mexican dock worker was funny since he wasn’t able to do one either. It sounded like it would have come from someone who’d been in America the majority of his, lived with an American family, so his accent was barely there anymore. There were also words that he pronounced too correctly or questionable. The narrator sounded like he was American, at least having English as his native language (no hint of an accent), yet there were words that he pronounced “button” as in but-ton (which sounded weird) or “exhaling,” and adding in a “z” so it sounded like ex-zaling. I didn’t understand that.
I forgot who said it, but someone compared Mary (the zombie version) to a “dead living girl.” For some reason, I just found that funny. It made me think of Rob Zombie’s one song “Living Dead Girl.”
I’m always on the lookout for mistakes, so when the narrator said, “We don’t get paid enough to get ate,” it made me smile. I don’t know if the author just used the wrong word in the script or if it was the narrator’s mistakes, but that was one of those random things that stood out to me. Otherwise, the story flowed nicely.
My only real question/comment I had was in relation to when the two characters were going back home. They were wondering how they'd get anyone to believe them. Yet, they had Billy with them the entire time on the ship. If they hadn't already come to terms with using him as evidence, what did they have planned for him, if anything? And they seemed to have forgotten about the previous boat captain who'd been a zombie and had bitten at least one of the dock workers. So, when they saw all the chaos going on, it wasn't surprising that the zombie...whatever it was, was spreading.
Love zombies!
