About this listen

Once upon a time, I was a little girl who disappeared.

Once upon a time, my name was not Alice.

Once upon a time, I didn't know how lucky I was.

When Alice was 10, Ray took her away from her family, her friends - her life. She learned to give up all power, to endure pain. She waited for the nightmare to be over.

Now Alice is 15 and Ray still has her, but he speaks more and more of her death. He does not know it is what she longs for. She does not know he has something more terrifying than death in mind for her.

This is Alice's story. It is one you have never heard, and one you will never, ever forget.

Critic reviews

"Disturbing but fascinating, the book exerts an inescapable grip on readers - like Alice, they have virtually no choice but to continue until the conclusion sets them free." (Publishers Weekly)

Great book

This book was well written. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I had to find out what happened to the main character.

Serious book with a different point of view

This book was recommended to me by my Library Materials professor. She warned the class that it was hard to handle, but very good. It was a good book, but not as good as she made it seem.
The thing I liked about this book was the point of view. To be able to hear the thoughts of an abducted child is interesting. It changd my view of how I view kidnapping situations. The fear and anger that the child felt was well portrayed in the book.
I wouldn't recommend this book to children, although my teacher said it was children's literature, unless the child was a mature, older student who can handle dark, realistic stories.

All too real

As someone who' something very similar to this happened to, this was an extremely emotional read. it was written well, the narrator was appropriately picked to convey that inner voice in the context it was meant to.

Horrifying. Real. visceral.

it hurt.

but it also gave the comfort of solidarity.

it was an amazing story. it's a sad story of how dark it gets in those situations.

Mostly Great

Narrator did an amazing job. The story really got you into how awful the girl's life is and made you feel it. The only criticism I have is the ending was a tad abrupt and unsurprising. It was a good ending still, just lacked that special something. Really made you feel a variety of emotions from pure anger to sadness. Well done.

A beautifully written horror story

I want to equate this to Jack London’s Call of the Wild. It’s a terribly sad story without a conventionally happy ending, a flawed main character who endures horrific abuse and tragedy, and a propensity to induce nausea. But it’s a story so well written and told without being unnecessarily graphic - definitely worth the credit even though it’s less than 3 hours long.

Good story, good reader.

wished there was more to the ending. The story ended too abruptly. Enjoyed the reader.
