About this listen

Constance Chatterley seeks to escape from the confines of a loveless marriage and the upper class surroundings that suffocate her. When she meets the gamekeeper of Chatterley mansion, Oliver Mellors, she is mesmerised and infatuated by his no-nonsense demeanour and passionate touch. The two soon forge a profound bond as a result of their sexual compatibility and sociopolitical views.

Banned until 1960, Lady Chatterley's Lover caused great controversy at the time it was written and was rejected for portraying what was then considered audacious, pornographic content. Of course critical opinion has evolved, and we have now come to see D. H. Lawrence's story as a revolutionary tale and literary masterpiece.

Lydia West (It’s a Sin, Years and Years) gives a breathtaking performance of the timeless classic.

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Lawrence at his Best

This is Lawrence at his best: women and men speaking of sexuality with great understanding of each other's point of view.
Fine writing and great storytelling.. I highly recommend this wonderful novel.

Lydia West's narration is excellent.

Your Ladyship was in those streets! Which one? All of them!

Before reading the story, I knew that there would be a page or two depicting the most raunchiest of scenes…never had I imagined that it would be so much more. This young lady was so infatuated with sex…its unbelievable. If it wasn’t for her cupping and “taking in” something, she was getting “cupped” herself. It for sure does not help that her husband, Clifford isn’t able to satisfy Ma’Lady’s physical needs - - -however, its through his encouragement that she finds a lover and begins a torrid affair with all the bells and whistle, with a lil extra for good measure. Each page seems to be peppered with descriptive sex scenes, sneaking off to a cottage, and falling in love. Initially I felt for Clifford, but he too gets in a quickie…or a sad attempt at one. I was upset with Clifford by books end - surprised that your Ladyship didn’t roll him down a hill somewhere; he was such an ass. I did feel Constance pain. Ma’Lady was something else…

Lydia West Could Make a Fridge Manual Sound Enticing

This is a very she-breasted-boobily-to-the-stairs kind of story. Very repetitive with a lot of fires in various loins type of thing. If I was reading this in written form, it would be an immediate DNF for me. Early 1900s smut just doesn't do it for me, I guess. The Audible form however? Lydia West's performance is exceptional. I got reeled into the story right through her voice away despite developing new wrinkles from cringing so hard at the storyline.

Wonderful surprise!

I had no idea what to expect but I really enjoyed it. Very well written and leaves you thinking. It was a little difficult understanding their use of the English language but I'm from a different time and a different country. Excellent narrator!

Stellar

Simply put, this is the best book about love ever written. I just don't see how it could ever be topped.

A truly modernist novel

After hearing this book mentioned in so many different places I decided to listen. As DH Lawrence is a master at his craft the novel is complete over rated.

One of the Better Classics In my opinion

I’ve read a few classic novels from different authors and this was a lot more enjoyable than some of the others. I’m interested in reading more from this author now. I get that it was a taboo novel for the time period. But there was a realness to the story that resonated with me.

Lady Chatterley's Lover

Wow! I had no idea what this book was about when I started it. I wonder how it got published way back when. It is a good story with a good narrator.

A classic you can skip

I can see that the topics and some frank discussion got this book banned but found the characters underdeveloped and boring. The reader was great.

great narrator

the narrator did a great job with the voices of the characters. the book is so famous I was expecting more out of the story. lots of commentary on class, sex, gender and industrialization but a little dry as a story.
