About this listen

Elegant, secretive Sabina may be empress of Rome, but she still stands poised on a knife's edge. She must keep the peace between two deadly enemies: her husband, Hadrian, Rome's brilliant and sinister emperor; and battered warrior Vix, who is her first love. But Sabina is guardian of a deadly secret: Vix's beautiful son, Antinous, has become the emperor's latest obsession.

As tragedy sends Hadrian spiraling into madness, Vix and Sabina form a last desperate pact to save the empire. But ultimately the fate of Rome lies with an untried girl, a spirited redhead who may just be the next Lady of the Eternal City....

A very good listen. And the end is wonderful. :) Fifteen words, is too many. Why can’t I just leave stars.

I got angry, I got sad, I became happy

This was was the last book of the Flavian era of Rome. Well done all.

I loved how the whole series didn’t follow one person the whole time. It touched on numerous people’s lives like a kind of web that connected everyone. This was a great conclusion to a great series.

SO good

I found The book is surprisingly the best from the entire series
The flawed characters , you can love them and then dislike them , the development of story and the narrator has come a long way since Daughters of Rome !

The narrator!

All of Kate Quinn’s novels are superb. This series is exceptional and taught me so much about the lives of the Romans. She is so good at painting a portrait of the intertwining lives of her characters complex personalities, and bringing, what seems at first a remote and distant history, to life. I appreciate her remarkable abilities very much and would recommend all of her books.

The story of Emperor Hadrian and Empress Sabina

The storyline of this book is great, especially towards the end: gripping! However, about half the book is from a male perspective. I think that they should have had a male narrate that portion since it was such an extensive portion of the book and the female narrator did not do a great job impersonating male characters. Also, the female characters in this book are strong and regal. The narrator made them sound ditzy. My opinion is to read the book rather than listen as the audible does not do it justice.

Fantastic plot, not so great performance

Whoever decided that casting a women to narrate a gladitorial male must have been very fond of the narrator and had no fondness for their story. The narration was so out of keeping with the character as to be wildly disconcerting. I might try reading the story as I was unable to really decide if the story was, by itself, interesting.

Disconcerting

Fabulous story - well read - would have preferred other actors to read as well - as in the serpent and the pearl - but this was still well done amd enjoyable to listen to.

Fantastic work
