Publisher's summary

In medieval Scotland, the illegitimate children of a notorious criminal vie to claim their birthrights, and find that love is an even greater prize...

Edinburgh merchant Tavish Cameron has no choice but to pay outrageous tolls to the nobility, until fate gives him an unexpected opportunity for advancement. To claim Tower Roscraig, all he has to do is admit that he is the bastard son of a murdering baron...and evict the proud, impoverished Lady Glenna Douglas from her crumbling castle.

With her father ailing and her village devastated by illness, Glenna has lost almost everything except her home. Now a ruggedly handsome stranger intends to take that too. Until the king himself arrives to determine the rightful laird, Glenna and Tavish Cameron must share Tower Roscraig - resulting in a scandalous bargain.

But something deeper than passion ignites as they realize that Roscraig has been targeted by enemies. And only by uniting can they evade the traps set for them both...

Contains mature themes.

Annoying performance

Reader tends to emphasize every other line by female voices and make the men sound like idiot Scottish brutes. Story fair but filled w significant loose and and somewhat disgusting story lines such as cannibalism, physical abuse, sexual saddism.

Not sure. Not my favorite

I have some issues with the story. Parts seemed overly long and drawn out and parts seemed overly quick. One issue is the speed of the relationship of Tavish and Glenna. One minute they are spewing hate at each other then suddenly they are knocking boots and declaring love.

I will probably read the next book to see how the story progresses but other than Justine Eyre's narration, which is terrific as usual...there isn't a whole lot to recommend.

Intriguing story

I rarely give a rating of 5 star. However, this audiobook is different from the usual historical romance stories that I have read. The plot twists and turns kept me guessing and was pleasantly surprised by unexpected turn of events. It kept me wondering how the story would unfold. I enjoyed listening to this book and recommend it.

Glenna is the worst

Maybe if Glenna was even remotely nice. Maybe if she didn’t insult him at any turn. I don’t know how he could even remotely like her. This book is too frustrating.

Narrator

Absolutely horrible narrator. She would have been good for the mother’s voice. It took me three times to actually get through the presentation. I had a feeling it was an interesting story.

Don't like it

The ending was way too rushed. I didn't understand the need for a lot that happened in the end... why and how they framed for a murder? what's with the priest? like why? it has a promising start and went downhill and the ending just jumped off a cliff.

Need new narrator

It might have been a good book, but I could not get into the book because of the narrator. I really wanted to listen to the second book, but it has the same narrator. I really did try up until an hour left in the audible but had to stop.
