About this listen

New York Times Best Seller

Han Solo and Lando Calrissian are reunited on the Millennium Falcon in a galaxy-spanning novel inspired by Solo: A Star Wars Story. But even the fastest ship in the galaxy can’t outrun the past...

THEN:

It’s one of the galaxy’s most dangerous secrets: a mysterious transmitter with unknown power and a reward for its discovery that most could only dream of claiming. But those who fly the Millennium Falcon throughout its infamous history aren’t your average scoundrels. Not once, but twice, the crew of the Falcon tries to claim the elusive prize - first, Lando Calrissian and the droid L3-37 at the dawn of an ambitious career, and later, a young and hungry Han Solo with the help of his copilot, Chewbacca. But the device’s creator, the volatile criminal Fyzen Gor, isn’t interested in sharing. And Gor knows how to hold a grudge....

NOW:

It’s been 10 years since the rebel hero Han Solo last encountered Fyzen Gor. After mounting a successful rebellion against the Empire and starting a family with an Alderaanian princess, Han hasn’t given much thought to the mad inventor. But when Lando turns up at Han’s doorstep in the middle of the night, it’s Fyzen’s assassins that he’s running from. And without Han’s help, Lando - and all life on Cloud City - will be annihilated.

With the assistance of a young hotshot pilot, an Ewok slicer prodigy, the woman who might be the love of Lando’s life, and Han’s best and furriest friend, the two most notorious scoundrels in the New Republic are working together once more. They’ll have to journey across the stars - and into the past - before Gor uses the device’s power to reshape the galaxy.

Praise for Last Shot:

“A fun, breezy read, with plenty of humor, Ewok hackers, murderous robots, and rousing fight scenes as Han and Lando go from scrape to scrape [to] track down a long-forgotten enemy.” (The Verge)

“The flat-out funniest Star Wars novel to date.” (Alternative Nation)

Excellent primer for Solo

What a great story! And Marc Thompson did an amazing job, as he always does on these Star Wars novels.

Incredibly fun with great production design

Absolutely loved it. A very, very good space adventure. The performances were great and the author really nailed Han and Lando's voices. Made me even more excited to see the new Solo movie.

Fun story, albeit confusing

The story is a fun one, but I never really got used to the multiple narrators. It often needlessly took me out of the story. I got used to it, but didn’t love it. Marc Thompson is amazing as usual. Daniel Jose Older should just write (TERRIBLE NARRATOR), and January Lavoy was just eh.

I am starting to love these new SW novels.

The author should not have voiced this book

The story was decent, but ultimately forgettable. The only thing that I really liked was the portrayal of Lando. The voice acting from the author was not good at all. Mark Thompson is always enjoyable, but having an amateur voice actor behind a professional was very disappointing.

Han & Lando Together Again

I had read the author's short story contribution to the Star Wars compilation book From A Certain Point of View and greatly enjoyed it. It was called Born in the Storm and was very funny, read by the author on the audio book. This is the first full length novel and it arrives just in time for the new Solo film.

Last Shot tells the story of a mad Pau'an's attempt to take over the galaxy using a device that had been previously stolen by the owner of the Millennium Falcon years ago. Now Han and Lando must reunite, both older and wiser, with Han being a married father, to stop the nefarious plot. There are twists and turns along the way along with action and more relationship issues than one would expect in a Star Wars novel. Both Han and Lando have things to mull over. The novel jumps back and forth quite a bit in both Han and Lando's pasts framing the main storyline. A touch of humor and a good deal of action keep the story flowing. It's more like an adventure novel. I read this book using immersion reading, while listening to the audio book. The audio book features 3 narrators, the fantastic Marc Thompson, brilliant as usual, doing an incredible Lando and Han. He narrates the main story. January LaVoy narrates Lando's past adventure, while the author himself, narrates Han's older adventures. Thompson could've easily done the book himself. Several other reviewers felt that the author's narration took them out of the story, I thought it wasn't bad, but did detract from the easy flow of the other 2 narrators. It was a likeable book once the action got going midway through.

Good but,

The story is told by 3 different narrators which for me pulled me out of the story.

Multiple Narrators?!

You can find plenty of other reviews on the story. I want to talk about how one chapter will be one narrator, and the next chapter another. This is such a mind blowingly horrible decision for an audio book - half the enjoyment of an audio book is hearing the charactors speak and their interplay between each other... but when all the characters have two different voices it just breaks the immersion.

Look, let’s call a spade a spade here. The narrators for Star Wars books in the past were Marc Thompson... and that was mostly it. I personally love him and think he is the best narrator, but there wasn’t much diversity. Diversity in both terms of voice and gender / ethnicity variety. Now, Disney has tried to fix that in some of their recent releases. A great example of this is Ahsoka - Ashley Eckstein did a great job narrating the book and bringing the characters to life. The narrator apart from Marc does a serviceable job, but I just don’t think having two narrators was the best way to include him. This book features two black characters - Lando and a female who smuggles with Han. If Disney was intent on having a new narrator, why not have him voice those characters? In my opinion they needed to let Marc narrate the book, the new guy narrate the book, or let Marc voice the white characters and the new guy the black characters. It just felt off in the end, and it severely hampered my enjoyment of the book.

Fun story, questionable narration

Cool story, and as usual a 5 star performance from January LaVoy and Marc Thompson, sadly Daniel Jose Older's performance as reader does not measure up and stands in stark contrast to the other two. luckily he has the shortest segment of the story to read.

Daniel needs some classes..

Couldn't stand his reading of his own work. Odd emphasis and stuttery narration. January and Marc are excellent as always, but I had to skip the chapters Daniel was narrating.
