About this listen

Set before the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story!

Han and Qi'ra don't have a lot in common other than not having a lot. They're street kids on the industrial planet Corellia, doing whatever it takes to get by, dreaming of something more. They each jump at a chance to prove themselves in the perilous world of Corellia's criminal underbelly, only to discover they are on the same mission for the same unscrupulous boss. When the job goes disastrously wrong, Han and Qi'ra are on the run - from pirates, a droid crime syndicate, the Empire, and their boss - and will have to learn to trust each other if they are going to survive.

Featured Article: The Definitive Guide to the Canonical Star Wars Timeline

The Star Wars timeline is complicated. With a recently reestablished canon, a tendency toward nonlinear storytelling, and an ongoing creative surge of new films, television series, books, and comics expanding the already massive universe, it can be incredibly difficult for even the most dedicated among us to keep the Star Wars timeline straight. This unofficial timeline explainer offers a brief illumination of each period and the stories set within.

Startlingly Fresh Story That Adds Context, Clarity

Rae Carson's precursor to the events of "Solo: A Star Wars Story" goes a long way in establishing not just the back story behind Han (Solo) and Qi'ra, but why the events that unfolded within the film itself are of such emotional heft and sway. This novel, set on Corellia before the film, provides a detailed look at the two characters in their roles as scrumrats and how each planted the seed to pursue their differing paths to glory and prosperity. The addition of a third character to this duo, the Rodian, is heartfelt and critical, adding to the sense of justice and measured sobriety of how cruel that big galaxy can be. It's a worthy addition to the canon and definitely recommended, particularly if you enjoyed the Solo film.

Pretty good stuff.

Saskia Maarleveld did a nice job reading this. My only critic is that I did not like her Han Solo voice, she did great with all others, but there was something about her Han that would take me right out of the story. Everything was very good and the story was real fun.

Great story overall but...

The end got a little rushed so much so I had to listen again to the last few chapters to catch a bigger plot point

Great back story to Solo movie

Enjoyed the audio book very much. I thought Saskia Maarleveld did a great job narrating however all I could hear for the voice of Han was was the voice Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio). It was the Karate Kid who stepped in to preform Han. In no way am I saying it was bad, or I didn’t like it, it was just funny to me that all I could hear for Han was the Karate Kid 😂😂❤️

A Fun Adventure; but with character plot holes

Overall it was a fun story, though the way Han's character was written felt... off. Wrong. He's not a hero, he's a scoundrel. And this book wrote him as everyone's hero. He was kind to droids, which isn't Han at all (remember how poorly he treats Threepio in the OT?). He sacrifices his own well being to help strangers. It just all felt off.

Performance wise, Saskia Maarleveld nailed it. I loved her Han voice, I loved her Qi'ra voice, I loved her performance. Story wise it was good, but Rae Carson didn't really get Han's character right.

excellent story, not a very good narrator.

I found myself thinking instead of listening to the narrator. I believe that's due to her monotone speaking voice. in the end it was a very good story, I only wish Mark Thompson had been available to read this one...or January LaVoy.

A decent little prequel to a decent little prequel

If you were a bit let down that Solo didn't delve much into Han's youth like I was, this book is for you. It only goes over one adventure, but it's the right adventure as it helps flesh out Han and Q'ira's relationship and tells us a little more about Corellia and it's society. There are some parts that made it feel like someone's first book, which I know is not the case, but I won't hold it against the book or Carson since I doubt this book was specifically written for almost 30-year olds. Overall a fun, brisk little journey that helps expand more on Han's life, but I kind of see myself listening to it only one or two more times. There are much better Star Wars books out there that I'd recommend.

Another win for the new canon

Saskia delivers another stellar performance in this exciting story that explores the origin of Han and Qi'ra's relationship and their first adventures together.

I like it for its emotional character development, everyone experiencing some sort of heartbreak or loss in the ruthless underworld of Corellia.
