About this listen

"Jagger creates an exciting blend of police procedural and legal thriller that recalls the early works of Scott Turow and Lisa Scottoline." (Library Journal)

Newly licensed attorney Aspen Wilde joins Denver’s largest law firm to discover that an attractive, up-and-coming associate mysteriously vanished several months earlier and is presumed dead. She secretly embarks upon a brilliant but dangerous plan to trap the killer, only to find herself increasingly intertwined in a complex web of murders involving several different women killed in very different ways.

As she frantically searches for answers, not only to trap the killer but also to keep herself from getting trapped, her hunt collides with the ongoing investigation of Denver homicide detective Nick Teffinger, a man who has strayed into the edgy world of a beautiful suspect to find out if she is a murderer, a target, or something else altogether.

With the stakes suddenly higher than they could have imagined, Aspen and Teffinger find themselves spiraling deeper and deeper into a deadly vortex where nothing is as it seems and time is running out.

Editorial reviews

Equal parts police procedural, slasher, noir, thriller, and law drama, R. J. Jagger's Lawyer Trap is in all aspects a great edge-of-your seat mystery that will keep you guessing till the very end. Nick Teffinger is a Denver homicide detective who is investigating the brutal murders of mysterious women in town and has trouble separating business from pleasure when one of the suspects is a ravishing beauty. Nick's investigation crosses paths with a young lawyer named Aspen's own investigation following the murder of one of her friends. John McLain brings his biting-tough performance to Jagger's terse prose, making this a gripping audiobook that will delight any fan detective fiction.

It was nice to read a lawyer story and it was ok. The twists and turns got a bit confusing at times, and the end felt too rushed.
Overall it was not a waste of time

It's ok

Good story hard to put down. Intense violence could be trigger for some. Not a courtroom drama but does in a law firm’s lawyers and its owners. Narrator was suited for main characters.

Surprised Ending

overall the story was good, but there was some grammar issues and unnecessary details in the intimate scenes. I found that some parts were just too unbelievable and others were over sexualized.

kind of graphic

I’m always amazed how they can keep the characters/ voices separate. Well done gentlemen thanks

Contrived ending seemed overly simple …. Sort of like ‘well, I filled enough pages, now it’s time to end it”

Poor ending

Was this book really that great or was it the fantastic narration? I was totally into this mystery despite the fact that some of the characters drove me crazy and I hated the ending. I was totally disappointed in how the lead detective botched the investigation and became involved with who should have been a suspect but wasn't because she was sexy and flirty. And the young attorney was not a credible lawyer if you think about it.

Really good murder mystery

I enjoyed the drama but the graphics were for adult readers. Do not recommend it for the young adult reader. Graph sexual content.

Thrilling but hard material

I enjoyed this selection. The story was interesting and the characters well developed. The twist towards the end took me by surprise, genuinely. It’s hard for that to happen these days, as we are programmed to look for twists in novels now, so when they come we are hardly surprised.

The author should really be commended for the way he/she chose to end the novel. It took courage to leave so many threads untied and so many things unresolved.

I wasn’t a fan of how easily and flippantly women die in the story - it’s a step toward the continued desensitization Re violence again women. I also thought that the story depended too much on the criminals being incompetent and unlucky for it to work and I usually think this is a lazy plot element used by authors. In this story, though, it worked primarily because of how comical this element was.

Generally, though, it was a great story with interesting sub plots and some excellent erotic - but not real racy - scenes. I would recommend if you are into mystery with twist.

Brave ending!
