About this listen

The trouble with humans is that they're far too sensitive. Forget you put a woman in the local jail for a few months - and she takes it so personally! And yet she is the one trying to assassinate the queen. And now I'm trapped with Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight... gods! That endless name! But what am I to do? I am Celyn the Charming with direct orders from my queen to protect this unforgiving female. Even more shocking, this unforgiving female is completely unimpressed by me. How is that even possible? But I know what I want and, for the moment, I want her. And I'm sure that she, like all females, will learn to adore me. How could she not when I am just so damn charming?

Fun Series

Would you listen to Light My Fire again? Why?

Yes. I love this series. Always checking to see if the earlier books are available . I don't know why they are not. Audible get on this. These humorous stories are always very much enjoyed. Delightful way to spend time and laugh.

Have you listened to any of Morgan Hallett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

A problem for her with this story. It's a shame. The timing is so very bad. This series must rise above the audio.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I did.

Any additional comments?

I hope for the complete series. I hope for a new performance. This deserves better.

must read

Elina, Daughter of the Steppe, aka Elina of the Ridiculously Long Name, has been sent to kill the White Dragon Queen, but is captured by the Captain of the Queen' s Guard, Lord Celyn. He presents her to Queen Rhiannon, who is intrigued and tells Celyn to take her somewhere safe as the Queen' s very protective consort, Bercelak, arrives. Celyn takes Elinar to the southern kingdom's jail and promptly forgets about her. Eight months later Queen Annwyl finds out about her, has Celyn retrieve her and and then requests that Elina to return home and ask her ruler, Anne Atli, to meet with Annwyl about forming an alliance. But first Elina will have to meet with the tribal leader, Glebovicha Shestakova, who sent her on a blatantly obvious suicide mission. And Celyn is tasked with accompanying her and keeping her safe, while in the background religious fanatics begin making their moves to overthrow the two kingdoms.

While this full length book could possibly stand alone, Dragon Kin is definitely a series that needs to be read, and read from the beginning, and reread. It includes laugh out loud humor, suspense, a very large cast of characters, their relationships with each other and a story line that continues to build over time. Aiken constructs very complex kingdoms with strong characters and she writes one of the best paranormal series I have read. She is one of the first authors to make my auto-buy list and she remains there. I am never disappointed.

Reading order:
-A Tale of Two Dragons - (prequel) - Braith and Addolgar
1. Dragon Actually (contains two books):
-To Challenge a Dragon - Annwyl and Fearghus
-Flames and Chains - Rhiannon and Bercelak (chronologically occurs after A Tale of Two Dragons and before To Challenge a Dragon)
2. About a Dragon - Talaith and Briec
3. What a Dragon Should Know - Dagmar and Gwenvael
4. Last Dragon Standing - Keita and Ragnar
5. The Dragon Who Loved Me - Rhona and Vigholf
6. How to Drive a Dragon Crazy - Izzy and Eibher
7. Light My Fire - last book I read.
8. Feel The Burn. yet to read

Great funny adults book!

The main characters strife and courtship is hilarious. I like how blunt the main female character is on what she wants. at first I was a fended but give it a few and it really turns out funny without being raunchy. I have to say this is one of the best audio books!

PRETTY PLEEEASE RE-RECORD

PRETTY PLEEEASE 🙏🏾 re-record the later books with Hollie Jackson.

I’m reading and listening to this series for the second time around, and it looks like the end of the series was recorded before the beginning and there was a narrator change with book 5.

The only reason I can think why ppl rated Morgan Hallett highly is because they listened to her recordings when they were first released and were just happy to get an audio version.
I discovered this series after it ended and listened from book 1-including the novellas-thru the end. I’d forgotten why I didn’t buy the last audibles for this series.

Morgan Hallett RUINED these characters for me. She is completely lacking the tone and spirit of the dragons I think GAA was going for. Hollie Jackson portrayed that lazy, arrogant dragon attitude PERFECTLY. Ms. Jackson’s performance of Gwenvael, Keita, Briec, Talaith, Izzy and especially Queen Rhionnon were spot on and exactly how I imagined they should be.

I think I was able to push through the first book narrated by MH because Rhona and Vigholf were relatively little known characters so it wasn’t as big a change even though she butchered almost everyone’s names.
I HATED the change for Izzy and Eibhar’s book but listened anyway because I’d waited so long for their story. But THIS one... I just couldn’t.

Not only has MH ruined some of my faves in the series-making Rhiannon sound like an absent minded old woman, Keita sound like a stereotypical ditzy high school girl (yes, I know her character is supposed to be a seemingly silly vapid dragon princess but MH did it WRONG) and most of the male characters AND poor Dagmar all sound like teenage boys. She just totally misses the mark, imo, on the spirit of the series. Hollie Jackson’s portrayal of these characters was sooo much better!

While I 100% recommend the Dragon Kin series, you absolutely should start from the beginning if you want to understand the cast of characters and why they do the things they do the way they do them. Although this particular story is one of my least favorite in the series (Elina is kind of annoying) I still enjoyed it overall. But do NOT buy the audio version after book 5. Get the kindle edition. The narration is terrible and the supposed accents (there aren’t actually any used, just some choppy speech) are worse. I will probably return the audible recordings done by MH and hope for a re-recording by Hollie Jackson so I can enjoy listening again.

For me, this is a Breed/Honeybadger situation. Hollie Jackson is to Dragon Kin as Charlotte Kane is to Breeds. Morgan Hallett=Traci Odom-no offense to either narrator. They’re just not the best for the respective series.
I truly hope GA Aiken does NOT use Ms. Hallett for the upcoming series (Scarred Earth) which, fingers crossed, is set in the DK world and will hopefully feature the offspring (Talan, Rhian, Talwyn and Gwenvael and Dagmars kids and even Freddy). Otherwise, I’ll be sticking to the kindle editions only.

My favorite so far in the series

Would you consider the audio edition of Light My Fire to be better than the print version?

Loved this book entirely. Celon and Alina's story, the continuation and continuity of previous characters and plot lines, seeing previous beloved characters with children (Gwnevael's and Dagmar's especially!! What a hoot!) the humor and spark had been lost a bit in the past couple books (Eibhear and Izzies book was a huge disappointment) but this one brings back the magic! And the narrator did a phenomenal job!

What did you like best about this story?

The characters, original plot, and hilarity amid heightened tension, weaving several threads of storyline together into a tapestry of magnificence!

Which character – as performed by Morgan Hallett – was your favorite?

Alina. Love them all but she really nailed Alina's personality.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes although I couldn't

Any additional comments?

The first book in the series was a bit.. We'll I had to develop a taste for it as Annwyl is a complete Mary Sue, albeit an enjoyable one. But from book two on I have immensely enjoyed the series, except in the handling of Izzies and Eibhears relationship and the triangle between them and Celon. That was a book wall moment (book flies thru air and hits wall). But despite my disappointment with that plot line, I have really enjoyed the whole series. Brilliant.

Inconsistencies

Great story but there wasn't consistent pronunciation with the previous stories. That really threw me out of the story.
