About this listen

A Reese's Book Club x Hello Sunshine on Audible Pick

"It's the ultimate mystery...The suspense will keep you up all night." (Reese Witherspoon)

Kim Lord is an avant garde figure, feminist icon, and agent provocateur in the LA art scene. Her groundbreaking new exhibition, Still Lives, is comprised of self-portraits depicting herself as famous murdered women - the Black Dahlia, Chandra Levy, Nicole Brown Simpson, among many others - and the works are as compelling as they are disturbing, implicating a culture that is too accustomed to violence against women.

As the city's richest art patrons pour into the Rocque Museum's opening night, all of the staff, including editor Maggie Richter, hope the event will be enough to save the historic institution's flailing finances. Except Kim Lord never shows up to her own gala. Fear mounts as the hours and days drag on and Lord remains missing. Suspicion falls upon the up-and-coming gallerist Greg Shaw Ferguson, who happens to be Maggie's ex. A rogue's gallery of eccentric art world figures could also have motive for the act, and as Maggie gets drawn into her own investigation of Lord's disappearance, she'll come to suspect all of those closest to her.

Didn’t catch my attention

I barely caught myself paying attention with this book and the voice seemed a little too monotoned for me.

STILL LIVES.........

There were many times during this story that I just wanted to stop listening; I paid for it so I continued. It didn't have that WOW! factor that warrants me to want to know what happens next. I would NOT recommend this.

First Reese Witherspoon I didn’t love.

The story didn’t really go anywhere. It’s the first RWBC I didn’t love. Narrator was good.

Sheesh!

If you like books that are light on plot and extremely heavy on illustrative, descriptive inconsequential details, then this is for you!
It was not for me…

enjoyed

A little rambling, but overall, enjoyed. Told in the first person. Fun LA references. I'm in a hurry and having trouble getting to the 15 words required to submit my review.

Captivated

I must say, I was turned off by the violence described about the artist’s work. However, I was more intrigued to keep listening and discover who committed the crime and why.
This book was well-written and had a very good narrator.

Boring

I did listen all the way to the end, and mystery/thrillers are my favorite, but I felt this was really lacking. I normally love the narrator, so I’m not sure why this book left me so disappointed. Normally I could listen to a book of this length in a day, but I’ve been struggling through it for a week.

A bit boring

i had high hopes for this story but found it predictable and boring. Maggie is a drag as the lead character. Kim Lord seemed way more interesting- would have loved to learn more about her story and POV.

If you like art galleries, you’ll like this

This book started with a lot of intrigue, but got way too bogged down in the details of the world of art galleries. I would’ve enjoyed it more if there was deeper character development and more twists and turns. The perpetrator sort of comes out of no where, the twist is weak, and I found myself listening just to know the resolution, in spot of how boring it was at times.

Still Lives a deep and involved mystery.

This was a very slow and complicated mystery. The group of players were diverse with a very involved back story But when you get to the point where you see what the author is getting at it becomes a interesting look at these peoples lives and the impact of a crime and its aftermath. Well written and Narrated flawlessly by Tavia Gilbert. Worth a credit YES
