About this listen

Winifred Rudge, a bemused writer struggling to get beyond the runaway success of her mass-market astrology book, travels to London to jump-start her new novel about a woman who is being haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds that her stepcousin and old friend John Comestor has disappeared, and a ghostly presence seems to have taken over his home. Is the spirit Winnie's great-great-grandfather, who, family legend claims, was Charles Dickens' childhood inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from a more arcane and insidious origin? Winnie begins to investigate and finds herself the unwilling audience for a drama of specters and shades - some from her family's peculiar history and some from her own unvanquished past.

In the spirit of A. S. Byatt's Possession, with dark echoing overtones of A Christmas Carol, Lost presents a rich fictional world that will enrapture its listeners.

No action

This is one of only few books i have given up on. I am 4 hours into the book and absolutely nothing has happened exept from a knocking sound from a wall. The narration is no good either. Everyone exept the leading character sounds like evil goblins and it gets annoying after a while.

Underwhelming

This story was weird, convoluted, & took too long to become mildly interesting. It is only vaguely connected to "A Christmas Carol."

Interesting but disappointing.

I love this author and yet, this long and under edited story was frustratingly filled with scene after scene that did not move the story forward nor draw the reader in. The audible reading was awkward and jarring as it the main character was American and yet the narrator was British. That would have been fine except that she pretended American accents for other characters. Since so much if the story was inside the head of an American woman I found it hard to connect. Not just the accent but the delivery. Overall interesting, but disappointing.

disappointed

This was a struggle to finish. I kept hoping it would make sense in the end, but NOPE! I forsure am lost on the plot of this book. Its like 3 or 4 different plots that tried to roll into one.
I have a hard copy of this book as well, which did help a little, as diffent parts and voices are in different fonts. However the story, with the way it was narrated and edited together was not good. I've never returned a book and I did finish it, but.....

Extremely Disappointing

It took me about three weeks to finish listening to this, and I'm someone who usually devours an audiobook inside of a few days. The story is utterly, blisteringly dull, and the narration is often unpleasant. Maguire is on his game as far as the writing goes, but the tale itself feels pointless. The ghost story gives the impression of having been tacked on so the characters had something to do, and most of the large cast is ultimately uninteresting and irrelevant. If you want to good read a book by Maguire, get 'Wicked'. Only the sleep-deprived and masochistic should purchase this one.

Yuck.

I couldn’t get past the third chapter. The main character is completely unlikeable, and even after listening multiple times, the narrative is disjointed and unappealing. A disappointment.

Don't Waste Your Time!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

For starters, a narrator who doesn't sound like she just awoke; and a plot.

What was most disappointing about Gregory Maguire’s story?

I was four hours into it and still waiting for it to go somewhere.

How could the performance have been better?

Some voice inflection, maybe a difference between characters.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger that I wasted four hours and happiness that I didn't try to finish it.

Any additional comments?

It's not a book to listen to for enjoyment and/or entertainment; more like something to listen to if you want to test your stamina and patience. Way too tedious for my liking.

I didn't get lost in this book

I didn't like the narrator at all! She slurred her words and seemed overly dramatic. I also didn't like the way the book ended. What happened to the other characters besides the main character.

Complex and intriguing

This was written and read wonderfully. I think that those who don’t get into it, don’t really pay attention. Everything connects and the storyline is complex and really makes you try to piece together everything all along the way and pulls you into the story. What a great concept for a story and I really enjoyed it throughly. Thanks again for a great reading and great writing.
