Publisher's summary
The number one New York Times best-selling author of Women Food and God maps a path to meeting one of our greatest challenges - how we deal with money.
When Geneen Roth and her husband lost their life savings in the Bernard Madoff debacle, Roth joined the millions of Americans dealing with financial turbulence, uncertainty, and abrupt reversals in their expectations. The resulting shock was the catalyst for her to explore how women's habits and behaviors around money-as with food-can lead to exactly the situations they most want to avoid. Roth identified her own unconscious choices: Binge shopping followed by periods of budgetary self-deprivation, "treating" herself in ways that ultimately failed to sustain, and using money as a substitute for love, among others. As she examined the deep sources of these habits, she faced the hard truth about where her "self-protective" financial decisions had led. With irreverent humor and hard-won wisdom, she offers provocative and radical strategies for transforming how we feel and behave about the resources that should, and can, sustain and support our lives.

Story
From the beginning, Geneen Roth was told she was too sensitive, too emotional, too curious, too demanding, too intense, and too big. Yet gaining and losing weight for decades did not improve her self-worth or reduce other people's criticisms. Like most women who struggle with their weight, she believed that if she could resolve what seemed to be the source of her self-hatred - how and what she ate - she would be thin, happy, and free. That belief, she discovered, was false.

Story
Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

In the early 1960s, JFK declared that science would take us to the moon. He also declared that science would make the “remote reaches of the mind accessible” and cure psychiatric illness with breakthrough medications. We were walking on the moon within the decade. But today, psychiatric cures continue to elude us—as does the mind itself. Why is it that we still don’t understand how the mind works? What is the difference between the mind and the brain? And given all that we still don’t know, how can we make insightful, transformative choices about our psychiatric conditions?

Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy - only keeping her from meeting her goals - she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. The Year of Less documents Cait's life for 12 months during which she bought only consumables.

Critic reviews
“Roth is courageous in her honesty.” (Michelle Singletary, The Washington Post)
“Roth teaches by example the transformative power of awareness. With compassion and humor she dismantles unconscious compulsions that bespeak an inner poverty, dissipating what she calls the ‘trance of deficiency’ that hijacks financial relationships and self-worth. Fans familiar with the heart and wisdom that infuses Roth's candid writing style and makes her books memorable won't be disappointed.” (Publisher's Weekly)
“Encourages stressed-out people to step back and look the good things they have - even such simple things as a treasured tea cup - to help liberate themselves from old patterns.” (Robin Mcmacken, Grand Rapid Press, Michigan)

Story
If every therapist and psychotherapist on the planet could repeat this to their clients, like a mantra, again and again, there would be fewer therapists and psychotherapists. Because it works. Very quickly. Realising that what you're worrying about and stressing over doesn't really matter so much in the grand scheme of things is the door to freedom and healing. And the little profanity 'F**k It' is the key to that door.

Story
Heloise considers it a blessing to be a person who seldom attracts attention. In her suburb, she's just a mom, the young widow with the forgettable job, who somehow never misses a soccer game. In the state capital, she's the redheaded lobbyist with a good cause and a mediocre track record. But in discreet hotel rooms throughout the area, she's the woman of your dreams - if you can afford the hourly fee. For more than a decade, Heloise believed she was safe, managing to keep up this rigidly compartmentalized life. But her secret life is under siege. One county over, another so-called suburban madam has been found dead in her car, an apparent suicide.

Fascinating
I found the correlations between food and money to be fascinating. I am also inspired to take a closer look at my beliefs and values and how they align with my behaviors.

Amazing Insight about Life
Which scene was your favorite?
Learning what Enough is and taking in what we already have.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, so many jewels to absorb, but I wanted to take it all in!
Any additional comments?
Geneen Roth has an amazing way of leading us into ourselves, through the door way of what we suffer from most. Be it Food, Money or how we spend our Time. Her wisdom shows us what it means to really pay attention to what we already have. In addition to learning the tools of taking in and really letting ourselves have what we have now. Now in this very moment.
Her journey is amazing and we are all better for her sharing it with us.

another great book by Roth.
Geneen Roth has helped me so much with food starting when I was a teenager and I am forever grateful. Her story about losing her money is fascinating and the parallels with food are spot on. Glad I finally read this book.

Good read to become money conscious
Author's very personal account. Story is hers but her insight was illuminating. I am now able to see a lot of my own "stuff" around money and feel empowered to change it up.

A Blessing!
Geneen Roth's writing style is wonderful and her tone honest. She says what needs to be said about food and money compulsions, and calls for the Reader to do the same. In doing so she opens the door to being truthful with ourselves about what all suffering boils down to: our perceived unworthiness of self. This in itself makes the few repetitive themes easy to overlook.
As a side: she does narrate this version. Some have mentioned that her voice is grating, etc. It did take a few passages to get used to, but overall I enjoyed it. To hear her words as she meant them to be heard is wonderful.
