Story
The number one New York Times best-selling author of Women Food and God maps a path to meeting one of our greatest challenges - how we deal with money. When Geneen Roth and her husband lost their life savings in the Bernard Madoff debacle, Roth joined the millions of Americans dealing with financial turbulence, uncertainty, and abrupt reversals in their expectations. The resulting shock was the catalyst for her to explore how women's habits and behaviors around money-as with food-can lead to exactly the situations they most want to avoid.

Story
From the beginning, Geneen Roth was told she was too sensitive, too emotional, too curious, too demanding, too intense, and too big. Yet gaining and losing weight for decades did not improve her self-worth or reduce other people's criticisms. Like most women who struggle with their weight, she believed that if she could resolve what seemed to be the source of her self-hatred - how and what she ate - she would be thin, happy, and free. That belief, she discovered, was false.

Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

I’m missing out on my life. What’s wrong with me? If that’s ever crossed your mind, and if you know there’s more to life than what you’ve been living, this audiobook is for you. It sucks to acknowledge that you are what’s keeping you from the life you want. You sacrifice what you want most for what you want in the moment. You know everything you’re supposed to do, and yet you feel stuck - limited by your past, overwhelmed by your future - in a purgatory of your own behavior.

At a time when we mourn public figures and national tragedies with hashtags, where intimate posts about loss go viral and we receive automated birthday reminders for dead friends, it's clear we are navigating new terrain without a road map. Let's face it: Most of us have always had a difficult time talking about death and sharing our grief. We're awkward and uncertain; we avoid, ignore, or even deny feelings of sadness; we offer platitudes; we send sympathy bouquets whittled out of fruit.

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Great read...
When food is love the love is outside of us and we have no role or input or expectation of how it works, impacts us or how to respond. we are and can be in control in a healing caring way with both food and with love.

A Book That Makes You Reflect
I listened to this audiobook and enjoyed it. it made me pause and reflect on my earlier life as a kid to uncover what may cause me to be compulsive with food at times. i am not a compulsive eater as the author and reader may have been but there definitely were some things discussed I felt were important words to hear- the need for self love to be able to love more intimately. the author brought her personal life experiences and challenges to the story and shared how she became "alive" again and able to be more productive, social and intimate because of it. Good book, I'd recommend for anyone who struggles with food/dieting. The author reading, was a little monotone... might have been a better audio book if the voice-over was a bit more engaging.

very thought-provoking
The connection she makes between compulsive eating & the hurt that can be soothed for a time, but not cured, is very striking. It is intriguing because it would explain why food addicts and others tend to switch from one addicton to another.

More on emotions than food and diets, just what I needed to hear. Emotional eating (for me) is never about the food. This short and sweet book helped me get centered, almost like a meditation. I’ll listen to it again, many times I’m sure.
