About this listen

The Talented Mr. Ripley meets Catch Me If You Can in this riveting, stranger-than-fiction story of the French con artist whose crimes span decades and continents.

In 2019, veteran journalist Mark Seal began investigating the suspicious death of music mogul Peter Ikin. Just 32 days before he was found dead in his Paris hotel room, Ikin had married a handsome, debonair Frenchman named Alexandre, who would claim to be entitled to his late husband’s fortune. As Seal dug into the case, he had no idea that tracing the incredible life of Alexandre Despallieres would take him from Paris to London to Beverly Hills, and unspool a web of intricate plots and deceptions that, for a time, made Despallieres a millionaire and left multiple alleged victims dead in his wake.

Mark Seal uncovers impossible stories about a man who seems to evade justice at every turn.

It was slow at first but quickly picked up pace and gripped me. The world of lies spun by Alex is astounding.

Good performance. Good content. Sad that people are so deceitful and manipulative toward trusting people.

Interesting story

At first I was reminded of Ana Delvey but I changed my mind as the story was uncovered. This guy was deadly. Fascinating story.

Deadly

This was the story of a con artist and killer who got away with murder. After killing his own family, he tricks wealthy people into giving him money and their time. When the party was over, he would poison them, since it supposedly would be hard to trace. The bulk of this story took place in Europe and unfortunately the con artist and killer died before he could be brought to justice. A very sad story, with many good people whose lives were ruined. Jonathan Davis does a wonderful job on narration.

This is a captivating true story about a man who I would consider one of the most manipulative & crafty con artists. He was able to spin every situation he came across for a long time … until he wasn’t.

Captivating

It’s the Same as Reinventing Anna on Netflix. It’s not the worse listen but I wish it could have been more.

I like it. At the price as a man Audible subscriber, it’s ok, but it needed more of an epitaph.

Feels like we needed a little more epitaph.
